BLUMEA 41 (1996) 439-442 New combinationsunder Hoya verticillata (Asclepoadaceae) and a bibliographicalnote onsperlingia J.F. Veldkamp& B.Hansen Summary Twonewvarietal combinations areproposedunderHoyaverticillata (Vahl)G.Don(Asclepiadaceae). Thereasonforthe delayin thepublicationofSperlingiaVahl is outlined. Hoya Inaprevious articlewe(Veldkamp etal., 1995) havereducedHoyaparasitica (Roxb.) Wall,ex Wight (Asclepiadaceae) toH. verticillata(Vahl) G.Don.Whilethiswas in press apaperby Kiew (1995) appeared where a new variety ofH. parasitica was described.ShealsomadeclearthatH.parasitica var. citrina(Ridl.) Rintzis indeeda formofH.parasitica, andnot a distinctspecies, something wewere not sureof. Roxburgh mentionedan Asclepiasparasitica Roxb.in 1814,whichwas validly de- scribedin 1832,based on materialintheBotanicGardensofCalcutta. However, in between(1819) Hornemannalsohadpublished anAsclepias parasitica Wallichprob- ably basedon materialgrownintheBotanicGardenofCalcuttain 1815andsentby Wallich in 1816andcertainly on a plant grown in 1818in Copenhagen (see also Mabberley, 1984).There are threesheetsin Cand Mr. R. van Donkelaaridentified them as belonging toA. parasitica sensu Roxb. Onesheetis stamped 'Hb. Horn.’ andannotated(by Hornemannhimself?)“Hoyaparasitica Wall.(Asclepiasparasitica Roxb.) Herb, paras.” (with thealchemist's symbol for herb); note thatHornemann published itas “caulefruticoso” and withthealchemist'ssymbol fora woodyplant “Aestuar. Gangis” (IDC microfiche 14II,6-7). Becauseofthestampandtheanno- tationsthismayberegarded asthelectotype. The othertwo sheetsbear referencestoWallich, but itis not clearwhetherthey were actually writtenby Wallich himself. The script is similar. On the back ofone sheet thereis "HB. 1815,No. 787',presumably referring to theBotanic Garden in Calcutta. The numberis not thatofWallich(1829-1847), where '787' isDidymo- carpusreptans Jack, while'8159' is Hoyaparasitica Herb.Wight. On the backoftheothersheet, annotated"IDCmicrofichephoto 14II, 4-5", IS written“Asclepiasparasitica Roxb.”"Indiaorientalemisit Wallich 1816." 1) Rijksherbarium/Hortus Botanicus,P.O.Box9514, 2300 RALeiden. TheNetherlands. 2) Vuglevadsvej 8,2800Lynby,Denmark. 440 BLUMEA Vol. 41, No. 2, 1996 Actually thepublication, not theidentity ofHornemann'sname is sofarofimpor- tance inthatitmadeRoxburgh's 1832combinationalaterhomonym.Wight (1834) transferredRoxburgh's taxon to Hoya and, as ithad no legitimate epithet, was al- lowedtouseany hepleased. He madethe(now) legitimate combinationHoyapara- sitica [Roxb.] Wallich ex Wightandthis combinationis to beused ifthetaxon is regarded as distinct. Thecitationof“[Roxb.]” here is intendedto indicatethatthe basionym is illegitimate.Officiallythesquare-bracketed authorcanbecompletely de- leted. Habitat—Commoninbeach forests, especially onislands. SPERLINGIA Somemoreresearchby BH on thepublication dateofSperlingiaVahl(see Veldkamp etal., 1995)has brought anintriguing piece ofhistory tolight. Inthecaseofthepublication dateforSkr. Naturhist.-Selsk6(1810) wehave thefol- lowing facts. Vahldied late December 1804. His very good friend, N. Tpnder-Lund, also a memberoftheNaturhistorieselkabetfinishedhisEnumeratiovol. 2,andSkr. Natur- hist.-Selsk. 6, whereVahl hadseveral papers. However, Tpnder-Lund,whowas a governmentservant taking care ofespecially custom problems, was sent onamis- sion to Norway early 1809.He ship-wrecked and disappeared in January 1809and was never found.Volume6 was ready fortheprinters in 1810and containedalong prologue by the zoologist J. Rathke, afriendofboth Vahl andTpnder-Lund.The prologue was an obituary ofTpnder-Lundand contained oneor twopassages not very favourabletoE.Viborg, anotherprofessorofbotany and definitelyanenemyof theVahlclub.Viborg, whohad influentialfriendsin thegovernment,haddoneany- thing toharmVahloverthelast twentyyears. He nowdemandedRathke's prologue tobe cut outbeforetheissuewas releasedtothe booksellers.Itis unbelievablethat this discussionwentonforeight years, butit is afactthattheissuewas not released until 1818withtheprotologue deleted. However, wethinkthat onecopy wasplaced in the Copenhagen BotanicalLibrary already in 1810, because thatcopy contains Rathke'sprologue infullandwas thussparedViborg's auto-da-fe.Itis theonlycopy knownto containthefull prologue. Ifthisreasoning holds true, effectivepublication tookplace in 1810,as thevolumewas availableto thepublic (Art. 29.1). Whether thiswas before27March 1810,the datethat Hoya R.Br, was published, is as yet unknown. — BH. 442 BLUMEA Vol. 41, No.2, 1996 Itis tobenotedthat allauthoritativeworks (Index Kewensis,IndexNominum Gen- ericorum, InternationalCodeofBotanical Nomenclature, 1994), perhaps by mere copying one another, haveaccepted 1810as thepublication dateofthenew genera published by Vahl inthisissue:Dacryodes, Schumacheria, Thonningia are currently accepted, whilePtyxostoma, Macaglia, and Westiaare nominarejicienda. Collyris is generallyregarded as asynonymofDischidia R.Br., alsoof27March 1810andthusthenomenclaturalfateofDischidiais identicalwiththatofHoya. Collyris was lectotypified with C. majorVahlby Panigrahi (1986). Thisspecies is nowD. major(Vahl) Merr., formerly known as Dischidiarafflesiana Wall.
