Walvoord, J. Dwight Pentecost, and Charles C. Ryrie Acknowledgments H eartfelt thanks go to the late Drs. John F. Walvoord, J. Dwight Pentecost, and Charles C. Ryrie, all of whom were my mentors at Dallas Theological Seminary in the early 1980s. (Seems like just yesterday!) Their insights played a significant role in shaping my views on biblical prophecy and other areas of theology. I continue to be grateful beyond words for my amazing family. My heart overflows with appreciation for my wife, Kerri, and my two grown children, David and Kylie. What awesome gifts God has given me. I’m also appreciative of Harvest House Publishers, whose staff of committed Christians are true professionals at what they do. A special thanks goes to Harvest House’s president, Bob Hawkins Jr., with whom I have shared countless breakfasts and dinners through several decades, during which we hammered out new book projects. What a fruitful relationship we have been blessed with through the years. Most importantly, I remain ever grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ, not only for His wondrous gift of salvation, but also for the opportunity He has given me to serve Him during this short earthly life. I say this because… • the Bible mentions Babylon more than 280 times. • the book of Revelation contains 404 verses, and out of those, 44 deal specifically with Babylon.1 • about 11 percent of the book of Revelation deals with Babylon. That’s a bit over one-tenth of the book.2 • while Jerusalem is the most-often-mentioned city in the Bible, Babylon is the second-most-often-mentioned city. That means Babylon is an important city for us to know about. • while Jerusalem literally means “city of peace,” Babylon means “city of confusion and war.” They are antithetical to each other. • while Jerusalem is portrayed as God’s city (Revelation 21:2-3), Babylon is portrayed as a demonic city (18:2). • while God’s temple was built (and will one day be rebuilt) in Jerusalem, the Tower of Babel—a paganized effort of human beings to observe and worship the heavens (Genesis 11:1-9)—was built in Babylon. • the book of Revelation describes the New Jerusalem as a chaste bride (Revelation 21:9-10). New Babylon is described as a great prostitute (17:1,3). • while the New Jerusalem is portrayed as an eternal city (Revelation 21:1-4), New Babylon is portrayed as a temporal city that will be destroyed by God Himself toward the end of the seven-year tribulation period (18:8).
