An Implanted, Stimulated Muscle Powered Piezoelectric Generator Beth Lewandowski NASA Glenn Research Center A totally implantable piezoelectric generator system able to harness power from electrically activated muscle could be used to augment the power systems of implanted medical devices, such as neural prostheses, by reducing the number of battery replacement surgeries or by allowing periods of untethered functionality. The features of our generator design are no moving parts and the use of a portion of the generated power for system operation and regulation. A software model of the system has been developed and simulations have been performed to predict the output power as the system parameters were varied within their constraints. Mechanical forces that mimic muscle forces have been experimentally applied to a piezoelectric generator to verify the accuracy of the simulations and to explore losses due to mechanical coupling. Depending on the selection of system parameters, software simulations predict that this generator concept can generate up to approximately 700 µW of power, which is greater than the power necessary to drive the generator, conservatively estimated to be 50 μW. These results suggest that this concept has the potential to be an implantable, self-replenishing power source and further investigation is underway. 1 v o R g . a s E O na . w g L w T n w C i A t s S R e v U E r a h M N H c n r E y a e D g r nt G B E r e e T n i y C C k g E A s o h RI c w l c L i o o r r n a U T t 7 d c h e 0 n M C e c s el 1/ a e e I E o 3 w T R T L z 1/ e d n L S E e n n i P h a e D, O n et e Gl Z o B c E n A E p e S T o i I c A n N P h s N o s nistrati A D rk Bio mi L o E d W A P ace R p M A S d E T n a I s W U c uti N a n O o A r e A al P n o ati N 2 v o g . a s a n o n w. o w t w i d t a e t al at n c c e T ctri edi gm s. nter C e d u n n e El a o y n C E s e OJ nal er i uro- oluti er ersit A Gl earch R o nt ne s nt niv AS es P cti Ce f ic Ce U N R n o t e e h r VE Fu S) nt th arc nte erv E e s e s TI nd F m ro ese C Re sity RA ela on ( nce o-p n R dical ern ern niver O ev ti a ur en e st st U a v M e e B Cl ul d ne Gl h W W ve a r A m A t e e n LL The Sti he and AS Heal Case Cas Res o t N rati O o , minist C ki, etr on s d M s A w f e a pac s: do e, st er d S or n or u h nt autics an orat ewa Kilg th G Healt l Ce n b L e a ro a n n o c Ae l h vi n r di al ol et e e et e n o C B K K M M ati N 3 v o g . a s a n . w w w l a ce ih r tt T ce e ) v t C elo en r m E ep n rm e )g OJ whr i entsali o m i R d e d on m or n roil P ho a vic etstis y ens, R mreys od et on O a o al b wcti s m tar e n ane F S) itey p o th ntse icon nautics and Space Administration RATIONALE ctional electrical stimulation (FEent is applied to the nervous sysction of a system compromised b Motor function Respiration Bladder and bowel function st FES devices are implanted intd electrical power for operation. rent power sources include: Implanted batteries Transcutaneouspower sources as for improvements: Reduce replacement surgeries Allow time without external equipme•Increase independence (allow FES u•Reduce equipment malfunction (wire al Aero Funcurrfun – – – Monee Cur – – Are – – n o ati N • • • • 4 v o g . a s a n . w w w S d E e t F a y ul all ed E m t t o n V ti t a s I , l T g p g n m C n i i n i E s i r u a o J B f st f o u e O y s c t - r i f u T l l i e o b C s s i s E a r a e J e r w O f e e w o R p h o n P t p e atio e o bl r n minist mi e t ta s. d n e A l e er c a c ac s l i p t p v S e u nd D m m e a d s i c uti a n o r e A al n o ati N 5 v o g . a s a n . w w w T P E e v C r e N N O C R e e O n elcsuM nodneT n o o B B T A R E N E G C I R n o T ati str C ni mi E d A e L c a E p S nd O n ne a o o utics Z ne scle end B a E o u T on B M er I A P al n o ati N 6 v o g . a s a n . w w w T P E e C vr e N N O C R e e O n elcsuM nodneT n o o B B T A R E N E G C I R n o T ati r C st ni mi E d A L e c a E p S d O n ne cs an Z e cle ndo Bo auti E on us Te n B M o r I e P A al n o ati N 7 v o g . a s a n . w w w T P E e v r C e N N O C c ri R e ctr eo e O on elcsuM nodneT elat n B or o e B z T en e i Pg A R E N E G C I R n atio T r st C ni mi E d c A i ce L e ctr cs and Spa ZOE e cle d musclpiezoele Bone nauti E Bon Mus ateed ator Aero PI mulwerner al tioe n Spg o ati N 8 v o g . a s a n . w w w r o t T dael a l u P edortcele evren m i t E S e C vr e N N O C c i R r t e cr eo e O on elcsuM nodneT elat n B or o e B T zn e e i A Pg R E N E G C I R n o T ati r C st ni mi E d A L c e ri nd Spac OE ctrode erve uscle oelect ne nal Aeronautics a PIEZ Nerve ele Lead to nelectrode Bone Muscle timulated mowered piezenerator Bo o Spg ati N 9 v o g . a s a n . w y w r w t i r u o y c T dael lat rgcir u e e P edortcele evren m n g E ti a E S r o e t C v s r e N N O C c R ri t e cr eo e O on elcsuM nodneT elat n B or o T ze B n e e A Pig R E N E G C I R n o T ati str C ni mi E d A c e L ri ac E e e ct d Sp O od ve sclele e nal Aeronautics an PIEZ Nerve electr Lead to nerelectrode Bone Muscle timulated muowered piezoenerator Bon o Spg ati N
