Itis operated by USRA, under acontract with NASA. The program office and asmall, core staff are located on site at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. USRA and the CESDIS Science Council USRA is a nonprofit consortium of80 colleges and universities, offering graduate programs inspace sci- ences or related areas, which operates research centers and programs at several NASA centers. Most notable are the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) at the Johnson Space Center inHouston, Texas, the Institute for ComputerApplications inScience andEngineering (ICASE) atthe Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, the Research Institute forAdvanced Computer Science (RIACS) at the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California, and the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) in Waco, Texas. Oversight of each USRA institute orprogram isprovided by ascience council which serves as a scientific board of directors. Science council members areappointed by the USRA Board ofTrustees for three-year terms. Members of the CESDIS Science Council during 1997-1998 were: • Dr. Rama Chellappa Dr. JacobSchwartz University ofMaryland College Park New York University • Dr. BurtEdelson Dr. Harold Stone (Convener) George Washington University NEC Research Institute • Dr. Richard Muntz Dr. SatishTripathi University ofCalifomia, LosAngeles University ofCalifornia, Riverside • Dr. David Nicol Dr. MarkWeiser Dartmouth College Xerox PARC The CESDIS Science Councilmeetsannually atGoddard to reviewongoing CESDIS research programs and new initiatives. The CESDIS Mission CESDIS was formed to focus on the design of advanced computing techniques and data systems to sup- port NASA Earthand space science research programs. The primaryCESD!S mission is to increase the connection between computer science and engineering research programs at colleges and universities and NASA groups working with computer applications in Earth and space science. Research areas of pri- mary interest at CESDIS include: • High performance computing, especially softwaredesignand performance evaluation for massively parallel machines, II July1997- June1998•Year10•CESDISAnnualReport II • Parallel input/outputanddata storage systemsfor high performance parallel computers, • Parallel hardware and software systems, • Database and intelligentdata management systemsfor parallel computers, • Image processing, • Information technology, and • Data compression. CESDIS funds multiyear projects at U.S. universitiesandcolleges. Proposals are accepted in response to calls for proposals andare selected on the basis of peer reviews. Funds are provided to support faculty and graduate students working at their home institutions. Project personnel visit Goddard during aca- demic recess periods to attend workshops, present seminars and collaborate with NASA scientists on research projects. Additionally, CESDIS takes on specific tasks for computer science research and devel- opment requested by NASA Goddard scientists. Asmall, core staff ishoused on-site at NASA Goddard. (ACESDIS organizational chart isincludedatthe end of this introductory section.) This staff includes USRA employees and university research personnel attached to CESDIS via subcontracts who work inone of three branches: Computational Sciences, Applied Information Technology, orAdministration. The bulk of this report describes the work of each branch indetail. Year10•July 1997-June1998 July"/997-June "/998•Year"!0•CESDISAnnualReport vii DIRECTOR II I I Dr. Yelena Yesha ([email protected]) Dr.Yelena Yesha is atenured full professor inthe Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engi- neering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), holds ajoint appointment with the Univer- sity of Maryland's Institute forAdvanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) inCollege Park, and serves as the CESDIS Director through a memorandum of understanding between the University of Maryland and USRA. Dr. Yesha received a Bachelor of Science degree incomputer sciencefrom YorkUniversity inToronto, Canada in1984, anda Master ofScience and Ph.D.incomputerandinformationscience from Ohio State University in1986 and1989 respectively. She isaSenior Member ofthe IEEE Society, and a member of theACM andNew YorkAcademy ofScience. Herresearch interestsincludedistributeddatabases, distrib- uted systems, and performance modeling. She hasauthored numerous papers andedited six booksin these areas. Prior to joining CESDIS inDecember 1994, Dr. Yesha was on leave from the Universitytoserve asthe Director of the Center for Applied Information Technology at the National Institute of Standards and Tech- nology. The Centers mission was to advance the goals of the National Information Infrastructure by iden- tifying, developing, and demonstrating cdtical new technologies and their applications which could be successfully commercialized by U.S. industry. July 1996-June 1997•Year9•CESDISAnnualReport 1 CESDISDirector ACTIVITIES I held a number of meetings withCESDIS Senior Scientist Jacqueline Le Moigne to discuss the research at CESDIS and prepare for the visit of the CESDIS Science Council onAugust 12, 1997. I met with Mr. JimFischer(930) and discussed withhim the possibility of hiring an EarthScientist through CESDIS. Imetwith Dr. Miodrag Rancic of NOAA, a prospective CESDIS consultant or subcontractor. Dr. Ran- cic's expertise isin the area of Earth science which will complement existing CESDIS expertise. CESDIS hosted aworkshop ondata mining anddata warehousing August 19-21, 1997. Top research- ers from all over the country gave presentations inthese areas. The workshop was concluded by a panel on strategic research directions for NASA inthe area of data warehousing and data mining. More information is available inAppendix A. Imade significant progress on completing the manuscript on electronic commerce to be published by MIT Press. I also completed a proposal to the National Science Foundation that CESDIS jointly sub- mitted with researchers from the Johns Hopkins University. Ispent time withmember ofcode 931 to understandtheir requirements for building adata warehouse. Professor Scheuermann from Northwestern University visited CESDIS. He has been on leave from Northwestern, andisservingas ProgramDirector ofComputer Systems Software inthe Divisionof Computer and Computation Research atthe NationalScience Foundation. Prof.Scheuermann met with CESDIS staff, and weare exploringthe potentialfor collaboration between CESDIS and North- western University. I held a meeting with the Beowulf team andafew professors from UMBC to discuss the possibilityof building Beowulf at UMBC. Iheld a meeting with Karen Moe of EOSDIS (588) and Professor Alex BrodskyofGeorge Mason Uni- versity. Prof. Brodskypresented hisresearch on object-oriented databases andwillsubmita research proposal to EOSDIS atMs. Moe's request. Professor Burt Edelson, Professor Nabil Adam, and Ivisited USRA's Goddard Visiting Scientist Pro- gram officetodiscusswithDr. BillHowardand Mr. David Holdridgethe possibilityof respondingtothe NSSDC solicitation. I attended the International Conference on "Women inTechnology",and presented a lecture on "Chal- lenges inGlobalElectronic Commerce". Ms. Lisa Singh, aPh.D candidate incomputersciencefrom Northwestem University, visited CESDIS and presented aseminar on data warehousing. Iattended the IBM CASCON conference inToronto,Canada. Iserved as aworkshop chair for four workshops on electroniccommerce. At the invitationofthe CEO and President of IBM Canada, Mr. John Whetmore, Iserved onthe panel ofdistinguishedwomen ininformation technology. I metwith Ms. Martha Szczur, Chief Information Officer ofGoddard (580), and discussed theopportu- nity for CESDIS to participate in new initiatives at Goddard inthe information technology arena. She invited me to give a presentation to her management council about CESDIS research projects on Jan- uary 28, 1998. CESDISAnnual Report• Year10•July 1997-June1998
