Description:

In the middle of a heartbeat he fell hopelessly in love with her. . . .

Scotty Hammond had waited so long to meet his elusive new neighbor, he wasn't about to start off on the wrong note with the beautiful music teacher! Overwhelmed by his dazzling dark eyes and drop-dead smile, Augusta Miller quickly pegged him as a big, hunky flirt--high on ego, low on gray matter. But she'd have to leave town in order to avoid him, and she'd just settled in!  Could the single dad next door whose touch made her sizzle and yearn be the soul mate with whom she'd play life's duet?

In a tender, funny, and revealing love story, Mary Kay McComas entangles a pair of kindred spirits who have much to teach each other about the lessons of the heart. She instructed her students that practice makes perfect, but could this brash miracle worker persuade her that everything she truly wished for was finally within reach?

"What happened to you?" Scotty asked softly, the tenderness in his voice bringing tears to press and sting against the backs of her eyes.  "Who hurt you?"

"No one," Gus murmured.

"Tell me," he whispered, his eyes black and bottomless in the porch light.

"Look, I appreciate the help, but it doesn't entitle you to butt into my life.  Why don't you go turn something to gold and leave me alone?"

"I can't.  God knows I should.  I don't want to leave you alone."

"I'll hurt you," she said.

"Go ahead.  Take your best shot.  I'm not leaving."

"No.  I mean I'll really hurt you."  He frowned in confusion at her seriousness and slackened his hold on her wrist.  She stepped away.  "Stay if you want to, Scotty.  I'm going inside.  I'm doing you a favor, believe me."

Okay.  The best he could do was give her a high score for originality and watch as she walked into the house and closed the door.

"I'm not afraid of you.  You hear me, Ms. Miller?"  he bellowed into the darkness, his voice echoing through the quiet neighborhood.  "You don't scare me.  I'll be coming back."
