Morphology and Modularity Publications in Language Sciences Publications in Language Sciences is a series of monographs in theoretical linguistics and its more formal satellite fields of scientific inquiry. It is intended to provide an opportunity for scholars working within these areas to report rapidly on research either terminated or in some definite stage of progress. Ideally, in these publications interest, inspiration, and openmindedness go hand in hand. Ger J. de Haan Leo Wetzels Wim Zonneve/d editors Other books in this series: 1. W. Zonneveld and F. The majority of the papers were presented during the conference itself, but some are by invitees who were unable to be present for various reasons. As a whole, we feel these contributions offer a good perspective on ongoing research into the nature of current generative morphology, the question of its autonomy, and its place in the study of generative grammar. The conference was made possible through financial funds from the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (ZWO) and the Faculty of Letters of the University of Utrecht, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged. The editors of this volume would like to thank the (many) participants of the conference for their enthusiasm, and all contributors to this volume for their cooperation. Special thanks go to Ivonne Bordelois, Peter Coopmans, Frank Drijkoningen, Tertius Groenman, Ger De Haan, Ben Hermans, Harry Van Der Hülst, René Kager, Jeile Kaldeway, Gerda Van Kampen, Geert Koefoed, Hellen König, Wus Van Lessen Kloeke, Hap Kolb, Albert Leenders, Anneke Neijt, Jan Odijk, Jan Schroten, Frits Stuurman, Henk Verkuyl, and Wim Zonneveld for offering extra help in various forms. Valuable help was also provided by Marijke Verhulst who - to our deepest regret - died in November 1987. We dedicate this volume to Henk Schultink, who taught us and many others what morphology is all about, but not only this: he was, in the early sixties, one of the first in this country to recognize the role the study of generative grammar could play in the advancement of linguistics. We are convinced this volume would not have existed without him. The presentation of the articles is in alphabetical order, with the exception of the first for precisely these reasons. Everaert's and Trommelen's editorial activities for this volume were made possible by financial support from the Niels Stensen Foundation and a fellowship of the Royal Academy of Sciences (KNAW), respectively.
