MN Angus A Newsletter For and About the Minnesota Angus Association, Auxiliary and Junior Association Winter 2014 Number 33 By Myrna Scharpe It’s Time for a Little Angus Fun Coming soon is 3 days of fun for Angus breeders and their friends and families. The annual events will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday—March 13, 14 and 15. It’s time for old friends to gather and meet new friends who enjoy the business of raising Angus cattle. Again this year, the MN Beef Showcase will be the home to these activities. Meetings will give members and others the opportunity to learn more about the Association, Auxiliary and Junior association. Friday afternoon’s Seminar will feature top speakers. The Annual Banquet will recognize the achievements of Junior members and recognize a Breeder of the Year. The Showcase will focus on The 97th Minnesota Angus Association provides the opportunity to purchase quality An- gus Bulls and Females. Dandy Acres Angus 2014 Breeder of the Year Gregg and Nancy Johnson of Pipestone Minnesota have been named the 2014 Breeder of the Year. The Angus herd at Dandy Acres has been the common thread through 49 years of changes on the farm at Pipestone MN. Start- ing as Gregg’s 4-H and FFA project in high school, the herd has been the basis of partnerships with Gregg’s father, Goodwin, and his brother Roger. Most recently Gregg and Nancy have shared the interest in the cattle with their children Mark, Neil and Kimberly as they grew up in the Angus busi- ness. Currently Gregg and Nancy are in partnership with their son Neil in the cattle. For Gregg, the early decision to build an Angus herd was easy. The fact that Angus “hung their hat on” mothering ability, carcass quality and easy calving drew Gregg to the Angus breed. In the 60’s the MN State Sale was in Pipestone, giving Gregg the opportunity to be a founding member of the MN Jr. Angus Association. In the early years of the herd there was no AI allowed in the breed. The foundation of the Dandy Acres herd was purchased from Darrell Heesch, Hatfield MN. The first two heifers purchased for $125 each. The next addition was a bred heifer purchased at the MN State Sale from Strickler Angus, Euclid MN. The first heifers were taken to the Paul Kraft farm near Jasper, MN to be bred by his bull. He charged $10 to breed the 2 heifers. Paul who was the Secretary Treas- urer of the Association at the time was a great mentor and helped get the early project going. Participation in the MN Angus Association has been tradition for the whole family. The herd started using AI in 1976. It soon became the primary approach to the breeding program. The embryo transfer program took off when Neil became an embryologist in 2003. Today all cows are bred AI or receive an embryo and are then pasture ex- posed to Dandy Acres herd bulls. Gregg and Neil share the herd management and work responsibilities. Dandy Acres first sold bulls through private treaty sales from the farm. In 1994 the first annual production sale was held at the farm. This sale has grown over the years and is held the second Sat. of April each year. New this year is a fall female sale, sched- uled for the day after Thanksgiving. Gregg and Nancy had the pleasure of working as Jr. Association leaders for several years while their children were part of the junior group. Nancy enjoys working with and getting to know women in the state auxiliary Neil is serving as the Angus Representative for the MN Livestock Breeders Association. Gregg has served on the Board of Di- rectors for 3 terms. Getting to know fellow Angus breeders and friends through involvement in the State Angus Association has been a highlight of involvement in the Angus business. .The Johnson family looks forward to their 50th year in the Angus busi- ness and continued involvement in the MN Angus Association. Seminar Speakers will focus on the Benefit of Balancing Maternal and Carcass Traits. Featured guest speakers for the education seminar include the Jerry Fike from Certified Angus Beef, the University of Minnesota Beef Team, and feedlot expert Tom Brink. Tom Brink has worked with some of the top cattle feeders in the nation including the Five Rivers Cattle Feeders. He was President & COO of J & F Oklahoman Holdings, Inc from 2008 to 2013. J & F is the cattle ownership arm of JBS Five Rivers, owning a majority of cattle fed in Fiver Rivers Feed yards. Brink recently spoke at the South Dakota Cow Calf Symposium held last December at Rapid City. Brink left J & F in the fall of 2013 to start his own trading and consulting business. Also developing a high end feeder cattle program that will be introduced to the beef industry this summer. He will be explaining ‘The Economic Advantage of Quality Genetics in you Herd and Feedlot' and 'The benefit of balancing maternal and carcass traits'. Brink offers the perspective of feedlot owners and can discuss those traits that can earn you premi- ums in the sales barn and get the buyers coming to you. Learn about the technologies that can improve your herds’ potential for earning and help make sound selection decisions. The seminar is free and open to the public. To honor leaders involved with the Association’s his- tory and shaping it’s future, each year the Association inducts members into the Angus Heritage Foundation. Four new addi- tions were recognized Nov. 18 during the Association’s An- nual Awards Banquet in Louisville, Ky. The 2013 inductees are: James Rentz, Coldwater, Ohio; John L. Schurr, Farnam, Neb.; Brian Halverson, Baker, Minn.; and the late Woodrow Wilson King, Rock Falls Ill. Each inductee or a family representative received a framed Angus Heritage Foundation certificate and their names will be engraved on the Heritage Foundation plaque dis- played in the library of the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo. Pictured above with Joanne and Brian are Esther McCabe, 2013 Miss American Angus and Catherine Haward, 2014 Miss American Angus. Brian Halverson found his love for agriculture at an early age in Minnesota’s Red River Valley. After attend- ing the University of Minnesota for a year, his love for agriculture found him returning to the family farm in Baker, Minn. The farm began as a certified seed potato farm in 1926, with Halverson’s father. Since then, the homestead has grown into a well-known registered Angus cattle operation and certified seed potato farm. Halverson joined both the American Angus Association and the Minnesota State Angus Association in 1973, and he served as a board member in Minnesota for 27 years, seven of which were as president. He has also repre- sented the state as a delegate to the American Angus Association Annual Meeting in Louisville, Ky. Halverson says he values the many friends he has made throughout his 40-year Angus journey. He and his family have hosted a number of field days at the farm, and have been responsible for establishing many new breeders and helping them acquire their first Angus cattle. In 2002, Halverson was recognized as the Minnesota State Angus Person of the Year, among several other community, state and regional awards over the years. He is Drysdale Farms active in his church and community, and has served as a 4- H leader for 20-plus years, and in 1993 was recognized for outstanding service as alumni advisor to the Barnesville Bulls and Females for sale private treaty & consignments sold at: Midland and St Croix Valley Bull Tests, MN Performance Tested Bull Sale, FFA Chapter. The application is available online at www.mn-angus.com. The MN Auxiliary uses the American Angus Association Auxiliary Scholarship appli- cation. This is used as the MN Auxiliary is able to send the scholarship application for one graduating senior boy and one girl to complete for the American Angus Auxiliary Scholarships. The American Angus Auxiliary updates the application every year by making a small change to the essay questions. By using the same application, the candidates for the American Angus Auxil- iary Scholarship do not need to redo the application, and the best qualified applicant can be sent on to complete. It is important that Minnesota applicants use the correct application that is the current 2014 application. Minnesota does not limit its scholar- ship to only graduating seniors. Any junior member, who has not received the scholarship and is attending a 2 or 4 year college is eligible to apply. Over the last few years, there have been a limited number of girls ages 16 through 21 who are available to fulfill the duties as Miss Minnesota Angus. At the 2013 Minnesota Angus Auxiliary meeting, member’s voted to add another position to the state representation, Minnesota Angus Princess. The Princess will work together with Miss Minnesota Angus and will be asked to complete similar duties as Miss Minnesota Angus. The young women selected to serve in these positions are asked to attend shows to help with the awards, be familiar with the Minnesota Angus Association and promote the breed. They will also be invited to attend the Miss American Angus reception held during the National Junior Angus Show. The Angus Queen/Princes program is managed by the Minnesota Angus Auxiliary. Let’s Have Cake! What’s a good meal without dessert? The Minnesota Angus Auxiliary wants everyone to enjoy a delicious piece of cake at the Annual Angus Banquet. For several years the Auxiliary has sponsored a cake auction to begin an evening of good food and fellowship at the Annual banquet. The funds raised from the cake auction support a variety of Auxiliary projects such as the Miss Minnesota Angus Queen/Princess program. The Auxiliary also supports Juniors with awards and a pizza party at the National Junior Show. Last year the Auxiliary donated $500.00 to the Association Scholarship. Support the Auxiliary as it supports our Juniors, donate a cake for the cake auction or purchase your dessert there! NJAS Aberdeen in 2013 As the summer moved along, it was soon time to pack show boxes and head the National Junior Angus Show. This year the show was held at the American Royal Complex in Kansas City, Missouri, July 5 – 11. This year 19 Minne- sota Junior members entered Angus cattle and/or entered the educational contests at the NJAS. Photo at the right shows the Juniors at Opening Ceremonies, Parade of States. It was an especially sensational summer for Luke Nord of Wolverton. Luke was elected to the NJAA Board of directors at the show in 2012. Luke will now take over the responsibilities of Foundation Director as he completes his term on the board of directors. Luke was a very busy board member during NJAS. Besides the usual duties of the board members, which include making sure the show is running well by help- ing junior members in the show ring and managing the contests. Luke had time to enter his Angus heifers and to complete in the National Showmanship Contest. His bred and owned heifer won late heifer calf cham- pion. Luke also placed 3rd in the National Showman- ship contest. Each state is allowed to enter 2 individu- als in the National Showmanship contest. Participating along with Luke was Emily Schultz, Comfrey. Luke and Emily won the right to participate by first winning Champion and Reserve at the Jr Field Day Show. The Quiz bowl competition has become very intense with a very large number of juniors taking part. States may en- ter multiple teams of 4 made up of members from their state; members may join with other states to create additional teams. Teams must first take a written test to determine whether the team will participate in the face to face rounds. Minnesota’s senior team scored high enough in the written test to compete against other teams in the Quiz Bowl Rounds. Cullen Walser, Minnesota Lake, Taylor Waugh, Goodhue, Matt Purfeerst, Faribault and Andrew Swanson, Ivanhoe made up Minnesota successful senior team. They placed 2nd in the contest. Other Minnesota Juniors who participated and took the Quiz Bowl written test were: Ellin Stolp, Oronoco, Emily Scholtz, Comfrey, Jason Jallo, North Dakota and Chris Moxley from Maryland comprised a second senior team. Emalie Stolp, Oronoco, Wesly Johnson, Pipestone, Nick Krog, Lake Benton and Dylan Miner, Hayward were Minnesota’s Intermediate team. Rounding out the competition was Allyson Stanek, Hayfield, Grace Stolp, Oronoco, William Goihl, Lake City and Alyssa Nesler, LaCrescent as the junior team. The NJAS also hosts a judging contest. Minnesota was well represented in the Judging contest. Those who participated were, Alyssa Nesler, Grace, Emalie, and Ellin Stolp, William Goihl, Wesly and Dawson Johnson, Nick Krog, Jorli Hauge, Dylan Miner, Taylor Waugh, Andrew Swanson and James Knutson. The Photo Contest offers a variety of options when it comes to entering photos. There are 3 age divisions and 3 categories in each division. Kelsey Glaess placed 1st in the Senior Division of the Around the Farm or Ranch category, photo above and 2nd overall in the Senior Di- vision. Allyson Stanek received 3rd place in the Junior Division in the Angus Cattle category, photo right.
