There isn’t a n o th e r one fo r an hour a f t e r t h a t , ’ said Lisa. ‘I’m com ing,’ said Amy, finally coming out of the bathroom . ‘Well, how do I look?’ she asked her two b e st friends with a big smile. Claire and Lisa looked a t each o th e r and s ta r te d to laugh. m ‘W h a t is i t ? ’asked Amy, worried. ‘Amy, w e ’re going to th e C h ristm as party on Bondi Beach, not to a nightclub,’ said Lisa. ‘You c a n ’t sta n d up now in th o s e shoes. How are you going to dance all n ig h t? ’ laughed Claire. ‘Y ou n e v e r k n o w w ho w e m ig h t m e e t , ’ rep lie d Amy. ‘J u s t b e ca u se you tw o d o n ’t u n d erstan d anything ab o u t fashion! Amy cuddled koala bears, Lisa b u n g ee-ju m p ed o f f a bridge in Cairps and Claire m a d e t h e m w a k e up really early so t h a t sh e could ta k e p h otos o f Ayers Rock a t dawn. 1 But th e y all agreed snorkelling in the clear w a te r s o f th e G re a t Barrier R e e f w as th e b e st bit. And now th e y w ere in Sydney, w h e re th e y planned to ce le b ra te New Year. Next S e p te m b e r, a f t e r this y e a r o f travelling, Claire w as going to stu d y a r t and p h o t o g r a p h y a t u n iv e rsity . Claire w a n t e d to # b e c o m e a p h o to g ra p h e r; it w as th e only jo b she w a n te d to do. Lisa w as thinking a b o u t j o i n i n g 2 th e police, a lth o u g h h er Dad didn’t know it y et. He w a n te d h er to stu d y law and b e c o m e a lawyer. And Amy w anted to m arry s o m e o n e who w as rich so th a t she could go shopping all day, every day! But now, they still had a n o th e r six m o n th s left o f p arties and fun. ‘Mmm. Look a t ail t h a t delicious food. B a rb e c u e d s a u s a g e s , burgers and ste a k s . L et’s have so m e th in g to e a t , ’ said Claire. ‘Am y? Clairel*’ in te r r u p te d Lisa. T h e y looked a t her. Lisa looked upset. She didn’t plan to fo r g e t her money. ‘It d o e s n ’t m a t t e r ! ’ she said. Angry, she w en t over to a n o th e r group o f friends. ‘D on’t ask m e fo r anything in future!' ‘Lisa!’ sh o u ted Amy and Claire. But she ju s t ignored th em . Later, as th e p a rty w as finishing, Amy and Claire w aited for Lisa so th e y could go back to th e youth hostel to g eth er. T h ere w as a cool wind. ‘I think th e r e might be a s to rm later on. I’ve got a headache an d I a lw a y s g e t a h e a d a c h e b e f o r e a s t o r m , ’ said Amy. ‘Oh, w h e r e ’s L isa?’ ‘Maybe she w en t back to th e youth hostel. The last tim e I saw her w as w hen we arg u ed ,’ said Claire. ‘W h a t tim e is i t ? ’ asked Amy. ‘Two o ’clock ,’ a n sw ered Claire. ‘Perhaps s h e ’s at th e hostel, in b e d .’ ‘Y e s , c o m e on. E v e r y o n e e ls e h a s g o n e ... And m y f e e t a r e really hurting!’ ‘I told you n ot to w e a r th o s e s h o e s !’ laughed Claire.
