Don’t think too hard, because they’re actually the Did same type of fish! Pilchards are small fish that live in large you know? schools. South Africans catch 100 000 tons of pilchards every year, but they lay so many eggs that enough fish are replaced A seashell isn’t f o r the next year’s catch! Because they aren’t being overfished, they are “green” fish for eating according to the SASSI fish list. an animal. But eating pilchards doesn’t just keep the ocean healthy. It’s a portable home They are also very good for your heart, brain and general for a wide variety health because they contain lots of omega-3 fatty acids. of animals. Fascinating swarms The way sardines stick together as one, is something really remarkable. Mostly predator fish live alone and often only come together to mate. However, a sardine is very small and has no weapons to protect itself from attacks by predators. Therefore, they live and move together in big groups called schools. This is their n atural self-defense. If they are attacked, the predator may be confused by the large number of fish and may not be able to catch any of them. Sometimes the school breaks up at night to look for food, but it will always r egroup in the morning or when a predator approaches. As the fish in a school are of the same size, baby and adult fish cannot swim together. Sardines react to an impending enemy attack by swimming close together in tight balls. This can confuse the enemy and allow the fish to escape. Their safety is in their numbers. 8
