It refers to cases with a focus on cooperation between the state, other public institutions, and different private actors. It analyses “theprovisionofcommongoods,ratherthan(...)particularegoisticself-interests” (Thomschke & Mohamad-Klotzbach, 2021: 2). We extend this perspective with regardtodifferenttopics. Firstly, thechaptersinthisvolumerefer, withoneexception(theUnitedStates), to countries outside the OECD world. In some cases, we find strong consolidated statehood, whileinothersstatehoodisweak, ordoesnotreallyexistanymore, asin Libya.Secondly,asshownbysomeofthechapters,localself-organisationandself- governancemaybemarkedbyviolentconflictsthatquestionthestateoritsconsti- tution. Thus, local self-organisation has the potential to challenge the state itself. Thirdly, we question the assumption that governance in general, and local gover- nanceinparticular, focusesmainlyoncommongoods.Ourexamplesshowthatthe interests of particular groups cannot be ignored when analysing local self- governance. This includes the inside view and internal governance of local self- organisations. At least we need to recognise that different notions of the common goodmayclash(also)atthelocallevel.Fourthly, westudygovernancenotfromthe perspectiveofthestate, butfromthelocallevelwherelocalactionandstateinteract. Fifth and finally, we challenge an implicit assumption of the governance debate.
