Dickson. She was born on 04 Feb 1913 in Springhill, Gallatin, Montana. She died on 13 Nov 2007

Notes on Hans' immigration:
Hans traveled to Denmark with his mother in 1912, and remained there until his father returned for
him in 1914. He arrived at Ellis Island on April 29, 1914 after crossing on the "Oceanic" of the
White Star Line (the same company which built and owned the "Titanic"). The ship departed for
America from Southampton, England, and the trip took five days. Grandpa Hans said there were
3,000 passengers on the boat. He wore knee pants and button shoes, but had worn wooden
shoes in Denmark. There were cattle and chickens in the bottom of the boat which were butchered
on board. He remembered sailing into the harbor in New York, and he said that it snowed that day.
He arrived in Dillon on May 5, 1914.
Grandpa said that the first words he and Jack learned to say in English were "See my hat."

Obituary for Hans Christian Andersen
Hans C. Andersen died Friday at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. Hans was born in Dillon on July
26, 1906, son of Hans and Kirstine Andersen. At age six, he moved to Denmark with his mother.
He returned to Dillon three years later, after the death of his mother and was raised in Bannack by
his father and step-mother who were owners of the Ames Ranch. He attended Beaverhead
County High School in Dillon.
He married Georgiana Crouse on August 15, 1933, and was manager of the Ames Ranch which
was running 10,000 head of sheep at that time. The Ames Ranch was sold and Hans leased
various ranches until 1942 when he bought 30,000 acres up the Blacktail, southeast of Dillon,
which he successfully operated until his retirement in 1975. Because of his expertise in sheep
raising, he produced high quality lambs and wool.
After his retirement, Hans enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was a member
of the First Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic and Shrine orders. He supported Dillon
community activities including Barrett Memorial Hospital and Western Montana College.
He is survived by his wife and his four children: Elaine Andersen Peterson, sons and
daughters-in-law, Keith and Verla Andersen and Dr. Charles (Mick) and Anne Andersen, daughter
and son-in-law Sally and John Kreis and fourteen grandchildren: Greg Peterson, Cynthia Peterson
Reedstrom, Cheryl Peterson Schurke, Mike Peterson, Julie Andersen Evans, Scott Andersen,
Christine Andersen Mitchell, Kyle Andersen, Christopher, Rachelle, Hans Christian, and Bridget
Andersen, Jeff and Heather Kreis. Additional survivors are brothers Jack and Harry Andersen and
sisters Olga Schindler and Christine Peterson and ten great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Barrett Hospital Auxiliary, First Presbyterian
Church of Dillon or to the donor's choice.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Brundage Funeral Home with Pastor Freeman McCall
officiating on Monday, May 13, 1996 at 11:00 a.m.

Miss Ethel Jean Davis and Miss Alma Christiansen were hostesses at a shower given last Tuesday
evening at the home of the former, complimenting Miss Georgiana Crouse, a bride-elect. The
Davis home was attractively decorated with a profuse array of garden flowers. Cards were a
diversion of the evening, with six tables in play, after which delicious refreshments were served.

The Presbyterian church was the scene of a pretty wedding Tuesday [August 15, 1933] morning,
when Miss Georgiana Crouse, charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Crouse, became the bride
of Hans Christian Andersen, son of Hans Andersen.
The Rev. T.J. Simons officiated and the attendants were Miss Olga Andersen, sister of the
bridegroom, and Frederick Crouse, brother of the bride. Members of both families were present.
Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Andersen left on a motor trip to Portland, Seattle, and
other Pacific coast points, and will return to Dillon to make their home in about two weeks.
The bride is a popular young woman of the community, a graduate of the county [Beaverhead] high
school, and the Montana State Normal College. She is a talented musician.
Mr. Andersen is also a graduate of the high school and for the past two years has been engaged in
the sheep business in this vicinity.

A lovely wedding tool place at 10:30 yesterday morning at the Presbyterian manse when Miss
Georgiana Crouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Crouse, became the bride of Hans Christian
Andersen, son of Hans Andersen. The Rev. T.J. Simons officiated.
Attendants were Miss Olga Andersen and Frederick Crouse, and members of the families of both
young people were present.
Following the ceremony the young people left on a motor trip to the Pacific coast.
The bride is a graduate of the Beaverhead county high school and recently graduated from
Montana State Normal College. A charming young woman and a talented musician, she is one of
the most popular members of the city's younger set.
Mr. Andersen is also a graduate of the high school here and has many friends in this community.
Since his graduation, he has been engaged in the sheep business.

Georgiana was named the Soroptomist Outstanding Woman of the year October, 1977. She
received this honor for her service to the First Presbyterian Church, the Dillon school board (twenty
years of service), Girl Scout Council, PEO (past president), Shakespeare Club, Nile Club, Barrett
Hospital Auxiliary, Cowbelles, Community Concert Committee, Daughters of the American
Colonies, the American Legion Auxiliary, Serve Our College Committee, and Sons and Daughters

Hans Anderson (sic) returned Tuesday night with his bride. A half-dozen other Danes, mostly
relatives, arrived and will settle in this part of Montana. The Danes make the best kind of citizens,
and receive a hearty welcome in every part of the west.

Hans Andersen Funeral Is Held Today
The funeral of Hans Andersen, 77, was held this afternoon from Brundage Chapel with interment
being made in Mountain View Cemetery, Rev. Warren Kunkel was in charge of the service. Pall
bearers were Bert Megquier, Clarence Andersen, Nels Lauritsen, Chris Peterson, Ras Hansen,
and C.E. Blinn.
Mr. Andersen passed away Friday afternoon in a Butte hospital. He had been a prominent
sheepman of Beaverhead County, coming here from Denmark in 1896. [He went initially to Elk
Horn, Iowa, where he worked with his uncle.] He was born in Aero, Denmark, October 31, 1875.
When he arrived in Beaverhead County he was first employed by the Gilbert Livestock ranch north
of Dillon. After a year he returned to Denmark and married, bringing his bride back to Beaverhead
County and forming a partnership with the late J. E. Morse known as the Ames Sheep Company.
Later he continued the sheep business alone at which he was very successful.
Mr. Andersen had five children by his first marriage. Following the death of Mrs. Andersen he
remarried and to this union one child was born, the second Mrs. Andersen preceding him in death.
Surviving are three sons and two daughters who are Jack Andersen of Alder, Harry Andersen of
Wise River, Hans C. Andersen of Dillon, Mrs. Emil (Olga) Schindler of Jackson, and Mrs. Herbert
(Christine) Petersen of Oakland, California. Grandchildren residing in the community are Elaine,
Keith, Charles and Sally Andersen of Dillon and Francis and Barbara Schindler of Jackson.
Grandchildren living in California are Marvin and Kenneth Petersen and Gloria, Ralph and Bernice
Pedersen.
Mr. Andersen is also survived by sisters and brothers, Mrs. Berg Christensen, Peter, Matt and
Albert Andersen of Beaverhead County, Mrs. Matt Groth in California, Andrew Andersen of
Canada and Thomas Andersen of Denmark.

Remembrances of Christine Andersen (his daughter):
Hans Andersen loved to tease, and had a dry wit, "similar to her brother Jack." Hans was an
excellent dancer and he excelled at wrestling. She remembers that her Dad was well respected
and liked by his workers, and they would often stop by just to visit him, even after they left his
employment. She remembers that he was quite sensitive to animals. As such he built the first
lambing sheds in Beaverhead County. He loved horses and built a "beautiful" barn at Ames for the
horses.
She recalls his generosity to those less fortunate. One day Jack came into Bannack and saw
some lambs being slaughtered in another's family's barn. He reported it to his Dad, thinking that
the animals must have been stolen from their herd. Her Dad told Jack, "If you were as hungry as
that family, you would steal lambs, too." He never reported the loss, nor criticized the family who
that family, you would steal lambs, too." He never reported the loss, nor criticized the family who

Notes for KIRSTINE Rasmussen:
Christine Andersen (her daughter) says that Kirstine was the youngest of the family. She was not
allowed to travel to the U.S. with out her older sister as a chaperone (Magdalena), though she had
already married in Denmark.

Kirstine was about 3 months pregnant with her fifth child when she returned to Denmark. She had
been told by the doctor in Dillon that she should not have any more children. She died within hours
of giving birth to Christine in May, 1912.

Personal notation from Peter Henningsen, from Aero, Denmark
And for the historical records: Today I looked in the church book for the parish of Rise and found
out, that Kristine Rasmussen, when she died on Aero in 1912 while visiting with her children, had
address in the town of Marstal, where she lived in a street called Møllergade (Miller's Street). This
means, that she must have rented a house in Marstal instead of staying with her family in Lille
Rise. This also means, that her closest living family connection here was my grandfather, who lived
just outside this town, and as he was always keen on people coming home from America with
news, I am sure he must have visited her quite a lot.

i. John Andersen was born on 02 Apr 1903 in Dillon, Beaverhead, Montana. He died
on 01 Dec 1996 in Dillon, Beaverhead, Montana. He married Anna Mikkelsen on 11
Nov 1930 in Butte, Silver Bow, Montana, daughter of Rasmus Mikkelsen and Ann.
She was born on 05 Sep 1910. She died on 24 Nov 1987.
ii. Lillie Johanna Andersen was born on 25 May 1904 in Dillon, Beaverhead, Montana.
She died on 20 May 1949 in Oxnard, California. She married William Pedersen in
Oct 1927 in Oakland, California, son of Sam Pedersen and Hansine Kristine
Sorensen. He was born on 09 Aug 1905 in Fresno, California. He died on 08 Jan
1982 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California.

William Pedersen
William (Bill) Pedersen was born in Fresno, CA on August 9, 1905, to Sam &
Hansine Kristine (Sorensen) Pedersen. His siblings were: George, Alvilda, Peder,
Alma and several deceased babies.
As a young man, Bill left Fresno and moved to Oakland to work in the Danish
Creamery. During those years (1920's) he also worked on a fishing ship in Alaska
and in a cabinet shop as a cabinet maker. He tried boxing and did so well, he had
an offer to box in the "Golden Gloves", but he had severely injured his thumb on a
band saw while working in the cabinet shop and it was too weak to hold up to his
strong punches.
His sister, Alvildia Pedersen, introduced him to Lillie Johanna Andersen at a church
function in Oakland, CA. They were married there in Oakland on October 14, 1927.
They had four children: Howard William Pedersen born September 10, 1928, and
died September 15, 1945 from a fall over a falls while at a summer church camp;
Ralph Harvey Pedersen, born March 27, 1931, and died March 30, 1998; Gloria
Christine Pedersen Nielsen, born June 20, 1933, and Bernice Dorothy Pedersen
Hawkins Whitfield McCrorie born May 15, 1943.
Ralph & Ruth (Hamiter) had two children: Phyllis Louise Pedersen Moe and
Howard Walter Pedersen.
Gloria and John Nielsen had four children: Eric John Nielsen, Karen Elaine Nielsen
Crossland Parker, Kirsten Lillie Nielsen Lang Proctor, and Leif Howard Nielsen.

During their marriage, Bill & Lillie lived in King City, CA, Santa Maria, CA, Tracy, CA
and El Rio, CA - all cities where he had dairy farms.
In 1938, the family moved to Nyland Acres, CA, where he bought a propane gas
business. His company serviced all of Ventura County. Among his customers were
Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Taylor, William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy), and Joel
McCrae. The propane gas business was sold in 1948 and the family moved into
the city of Oxnard, CA. Lillie Andersen, his wife, was born May 25, 1904, and died
of cancer May 22, 1949.
Bill married Eva Simmons in October, 1950. In the fall of 1951, Bill, Eva, Ralph &
Bernice moved to Santa Rosa, CA and lived on a 5 acre ranch and raised chickens,
sheep and rabbits. (Gloria remained in Oxnard to finish college) In 1960, Bill
retired, sold the ranch and moved into the city of Santa Rosa. Bill died January 8,
1982.

Emil Schindler passed away July 10, 1988, after an extended illness at Parkview
Convalescent Center.
Mr. Schindler, 84, was born Jan 26, 1904, in Shelby, Nebraska, to Emma Benda
and Joseph Schindler, early settlers in the Big Hole. He attended elementary
school in districts 25 and 24 in Jackson and Beaverhead County High School. Mr.
Schindler spent his entire life as a rancher. He moved to Dillon in 1978, remaining
active in the ranching business until 1985.
Mr. Schindler prided himself on hard work and raising quality beef cattle. He
volunteered his services on the Beaverhead County Weed Board. Mr. Schindler
served as school board trustee for Districts 25 and 24 of Jackson for many years.
He was a longtime 4H leader, served as council president and was on the State 4 H
Council.
Mr. Schindler was largely responsible for actively starting the Church of the Big
Hole and later seved as an elder in that church. He was always a willing, active
participant in donating his services to numerous community projects.
Mr. Schinlder married Olga Andersen, Sept. 25, 1937, in Dillon. She survives, as
do his children Francis and Diane Schindler of Jackson; Barbara and Bill
Frederickson of Butte; and three grandchidren.
He was preceede in death by his sister, Wilhelmina "Mitzie" Skeeters.
Funeral sevice will be held on Tursday, at 11:00 a.m. at Brundage Chapel in Dillon.
v. Christine Hansine Andersen was born on 15 May 1912 in Lille Rise, Aero,
Denmark. She married Herbert Peterson. He was born on 15 Apr 1909 in San
Leandro, California. He died on 01 Nov 1985 in Calistoga, California.

Christine was brought to America by Margareth Eriksen, her step-mother's sister.
They traveled on the "Oscar II" and arrived at Ellis Island on July 20, 1920.

This is a scanning from the parish register of the town of Marstal from 1912. Here
you can see, that Kristine Hansine (named after both her parents as none of them
were present at the christening) were baptized at home by the vicar and later
presented in church on the 8th of september 1912. Godfathers and godmothers
were: Worker Klaus Andersen and his wife, Møllevejen (Miller's road) in Marstal
(This must be Hans Andersen's oldest brother Claus); Farmer Thomas Hansen
Andersen and his wife in Ærøskøbing (Hans Andersen's brother) and bachelor
Mads Olsen Andersen from Lille Rise (Hans Andersens's brother. So he had not
migrated to the states at that time. Maybe he went along with his brother Hans
when he came to Aero to pick up his children in 1914)

married JOHANNE Kroman on 29 Sep 1870 in Rise, Aero, Denmark.
5. JOHANNE Kroman, daughter of ANDERS Hansen Kroman and KIRSTINE Thomsen was born on
06 May 1848 in Graesvaenge, Aero, Denmark. She died on 15 Feb 1924 in Lille Rise, Aero,
Denmark.

Johan had several brothers and sisters. Christine Andersen (sister to Hans Christian Andersen)
knew only one, Andrew. Five of Andrew's male children came to Dillon: Clarence, Chris, John,
Hans and Andrew. Clarence Andersen (b. 11-2-1886), married Laura Hansen, and his brother
John married Maren Hansen. (Sisters married brothers). Laura and her sister Maren Hansen were
John married Maren Hansen. (Sisters married brothers). Laura and her sister Maren Hansen were
brought to America by Hans Andersen, Sr. in April, 1914.

Christine Andersen says she remembers celebrating her grandfather's 90th birthday. She was six
years old at the time she went to the birthday celebration, and she remembers drinking a glass of
Danish alcohol.

Conversation with Ib Christensen (historian from Aero) says, "You are probably right that they did
not use Kroman as family name, since this originally was a nickname. Also among siblings you
may find some that used Kroman and others that did not. Often the males would use the nickname
and females would not - this differs from family to family - as does the spelling of Kroman.
(Kroman, Kromann, or Kromand) The name means innkeeper, since "Kro" = "Inn" and "mand" =
"man" or "person". The first person that had the nickname was called Kroejer (in Danish Krøjer),
which is local dialect for Innkeeper. The different spellings are caused by the different priests who
for the major part, were not from the island, and therefore did not know the local dialect all too well,
and therefore had different opinions as to the right spelling. It is not unusual for a nickname which

iii. Johan Hansen "John" Anderson was born on 28 Dec 1873 in Lille Rise, Aero,
Denmark. He died on 06 Jan 1950 in Alder, Madison, Montana. He married Egidia
Jepsen on 18 Apr 1915 in Dillon, Beaverhead, Montana, daughter of Jens Peder
Jepsen and Mette Marie Christensen. She was born on 03 Jul 1882. She died in
Oct 1954.

John H. Anderson was born December 28,1873, on the island of Aero in Denmark.
His father was a custom butcher with a family of eight sons and two daughters.
When John was 16 he came to the United States, arriving at Elk Horn, Iowa, in the
spring of 1889. He worked on his uncle's farm for three years and also received his
citizenship papers.
In the early spring of 1892, he arrived in Dillon and went to work for Mr. Selway on
his ranch that bordered Dillon on the north side in the area where the Lion's Den is
now. He later leased the Billy Gilbert Ranch north of Dillon for two years. Then
John and a Danish friend of his, as partners, operated a dairy on the place now
owned by Gayle Chaffin on Grasshopper Creek, and sold milk and butter in
Bannack. After selling the dairy business, like all ambitious young men, he tried the
life of a cowboy. John trailed fat steers from the Big Hole Valley to Butte for the
Butte Butcher Co.
In 1898 John went to work for J.E. Morse, a rancher with extensive properties and a
large sheep operation. John began working with the sheep and that business soon
became his way of life. He was the sheep foreman for Mr. Morse from 1900 to
1908.
John, in partnership with his brother Peter H. Anderson, bought their first two bands
of sheep in 1905. John homesteaded on Carter Creek in Beaverhead County,
seven miles east of Dillon, and his brother Pete homesteaded on Robb Creek on
the Upper Ruby in Madison County. Pete managed their sheep while John
continued to work for J.E. Morse until 1908, when Mr. Morse sold the operation of
which John was in charge to the Beaverhead Ranch Co. After 1908, the Anderson
brothers increased their holdings and purchased the Max Lauterbach Ranch and
Livestock.
In 1915 John married Egedia Jepsen in Dillon. They had one son, John Jr. and
three daughters Edna, Marie, and Clara.

During their partnership, John and Pete continued to expand and bought the
Beaverhead Ranch Co.'s holdings in 1918, and the Lower Larbee Ranch and Elling
Ranch in 1919. By 1923, the Andersons had put together a large sheep ranch
operating approximately 28.000 head of sheep. In 1925, John and Pete dissolved
the partnership, divided the property, and each continued in the sheep business for
himself.
John lived in Dillon for 28 years, from 1892 to 1920. In the fall of 1920, he moved
his family south of Alder. John continued to expand his operation during his lifetime
and the ranch is still operated today by his son John H. Anderson, Jr., and family.
The ranch where John and Egidia lived in Alder is the home of son-in-law and
daughter Karl L. and Edna Sauerbier. John H. Anderson died January 6, 1950, at
the age of 76. His wife, Egidia, passed away in October of 1954.
