Memorial Latin Series LATIN II Progress reading in PAUL F. DISTLER S.J. , St. Louis University High School LOYOLA UNIVERSITY PRESS Chicago, 1963 © 1963 Loyola University Press © 1962 PREFACE This volume is a sequel to « Beginning Reading >>and is intended for use in the second year of the of Latin . The readings , the pres entation of grammar, and the exercises are combined into functional units that should help the serious student progress in his ability to read Latin with direct comprehension . Despite the varying backgrounds and abilities of students and the forgetfulness consequent upon a summer's vacation, « Progress in Reading » can be used effectively by alltypes ofstudents who used «Beginning Reading » infreshman year. Starting with the first and second declensions, this text covers substantially the same material that isfound inthe first volume. The presentation ofmorphology though ismore compact and the grammar issomewhat more amply treated than in«Beginning Reading ». Even students who have used atext oth erthan the first ofthis series can use this text insecond year, since itbegins with the very elements ofthe Latin language. Teachers who use«Progress nReading»should know how much i ofthe first volume was completed bytheir students. Ifthis isknown, it iseasy todetermine how much ofthe present volume will involve review and atwhat point students will begin the study ofnew material. For example, classes that have completed only sixteen lessons inthe first volume will finish their review with the completion ofthe first part oflesson ten ofthis book. For such agroup, however, the first nine lessons will not bemere review, since the readings are new and new points ofgrammar are introduced from time totime. All readings inthis text are graded in structure and vocabulary; that is, noconstruction orvocabulary word appears inareading un less ithas been seen before, orunless itisexplained inthe lesson in which the reading appears . Unlike the first-year text, «Beginning Reading », the readings in this volume are continuous and tell the story ofthe events leading up to the Trojan War aswell asmost ofthe incidents ofthis war asrelated inHomer's «Iliad ».. Incomposing the readings that tell the story of State University of lowa V L3RARIES
