V PREFACE The desire to improve the environment in areas where the land has been reduced to dereliction through industrial and other uses has lead to policies - at local, national and international levels - aimed at promoting land reclamation. Dereliction results from many causes. Similarly a breadth of disciplines and skills are employed in the planning and implementation of land reclamation schemes. The necessity for a multi-disciplinary approach to reclaiming land is reflected in the contents of this book, which considers all stages of land reclamation projects from the initial policy decisions to the management of completed schemes. The papers published in this book were presented at the 3rd Land Reclamation Conference to be organised under the auspices of the Standing Local Authority Officers' Panel on Land Reclamation, held at the University of Wales College of Cardiff in July 1991. The major theme of the conference was "An end to dereliction?" - are the necessary planning, engineering and scientific skills available to regenerate areas and improve the environment? The purpose of this conference was to establish the current state-of-the-art by bringing together those associated with all aspects of the reclamation of land. The wide range of disciplines covered by the contents of this book necessitated the skills of specialist reviewers. For this assistance I am most grateful to Basil Evans, Martin Hooker, Pat Sheppard Williams and Paul Wright. MICHAEL C. R.
