With approximately 27 divisions of the Baptist Church, includingSouthernBaptist,FreeWillBaptist, LandmarkBaptist, etc.,itisdifficulttodetermineexactly what each division teaches. However, several tenets of BaptistdoctrineareheldincommonbymostBaptists. Thisbookwilldealwithonlyafewofthosemajortenets. And,sincetheSouthernBaptistdenominationisthelarg- estBaptistdivision,manyofthereferencesdocument- ingBaptistteachingcomefromitsleaders. ItismyearnestdesirethatthoseBaptistswhoread thisbookwillheedthewordsofoneoftheirfoundingfa- thers.In1609,JohnSmyth,indefendinghispositionto change religions, wrote: “To change a false Religion is commendable,andtoretainafalseReligionisdamna- ble”(asquotedinMcBeth,1990, p.19).Ihavewritten thisbookoutoflove,inordertospeakdirectlytoindivid- ual Baptists who have sincere hearts and who want to knowtheTruth. Chapter 1 THE BAPTIST CHURCH— A DENOMINATION MostreligiouspeopleintheUnitedStatesarequite familiarwiththeword“denomination.”Infact, multiplied millionsofpeopleallovertheworldaremembersofone religiousdenominationoranother.TheBaptistChurch, withouthesitation,identifiesitselfasaChristiandenom- ination.JamesSullivan, inhisbook,BaptistPolity:AsI SeeIt,wroteanentirechaptertitled“TypicalKindsof DenominationalStructures.”Inthatchapterherepeat- edlydiscussedtheSouthernBaptistdenomination (1998, pp.45-58).IntheBaptistFaithandMessage, underArticleXIVtitled“Cooperation,”thetextstates: “cooperationisdesirablebetweenthevariousChristian denominations”(emp.added).In2001,AlbertMohler Jr.,then-presidentoftheSouthernBaptistTheological Seminary,describedtheBaptistChurchasa“denomi- -1- 2 What the Bible Says... nation”atleastfourtimesinhisthree-pageintroduction toStantonNorman’sbook,MoreThanJustaName (2001a,pp.vii-ix).FurtherreadingofmostBaptistlit- eraturecouldmultiplythesetypesofquotesbythehun- dreds.Therefore,wemustask,“Whatisadenomina- tion?”and,“WhatdoestheBiblesayaboutdenomina- tions?” What is a Denomination? Considerthefollowingdictionarydefinitions(Amer- ican...,2000, p. 485). The term “denominate” means “to give a name to; designate.” A “Denomination” is a “largegroupofreligiouscongregationsunitedundera commonfaithandnameandorganizedunderasingle administrativeandlegalhierarchy;anameordesigna- tion,especiallyforaclassorgroup.”Theterm“denomi- nator”referstothe“expressionwrittenbelowthelinein a common fraction that indicates the number of parts intowhichonewholeisdivided.”“Denominationalism” isthe“tendencytoseparateintoreligiousdenominations; sectarianism.”Thinkaboutthesemeaningsforjustamo- ment. The very word “denomination” means a named ordesignateddivision.Denominationalismoccurswhen religiouspeopleandgroupsdivideandsegregatethem- selves on the basis of different designations or church affiliationsanddifferentdoctrines. The Baptist Church—A Denomination 3 What does the Bible Say about Denominations? EdwardHiscoxwroteTheStandardManualfor BaptistChurches.By1951,atleast160,000ofhisman- ualswereinprint.Inhissectiontitled“Church-member- ship,”hewrote:“ItismostlikelythatintheApostolic agewhentherewasbut‘oneLord, onefaith, andone baptism,’andnodifferingdenominationsexisted, thebaptismofaconvertbytheveryactconstitutedhim amemberofthechurch”(1903,p.22,emp.added). HerschelHobbs, inhisbook,WhatBaptistsBelieve, wrote:“Theword‘church’isneverusedintheNewTes- tamentinthesenseofadenominationorofanysegment oforganizedhistoricChristianity.”Twopageslater,he againstated: “Theword‘church’isneverusedinthe NewTestamenttorefertoabuildingoradenomination. Itisusedonlytorefertoalltheredeemedofallagesand toalocalbodyofbaptizedbelievers.Themajorityofits references are to the local church” (1964, pp. 75, 77). ErnestMosley,inBasicsforBaptists, declared: ThewordchurchintheNewTestamentisnever usedtorefertoabuilding—“Ourchurchissouthof townonHighway29”;anactivity—“Areyougoing to11:00a.m.churchtomorrow?”;oradenomi- nation—“Ialwaysthoughtyouwereamemberof theMethodistchurch.”Itreferseithertothere- deemedinChristofalltheagesortoalocal body(congregation)ofbelieversinChrist…” (1996,p.55,emp.added). 4 What the Bible Says... BylookingatthesequotesfromseveralBaptistauthori- ties, itiscleartheyrecognizedthattheLord’schurchin theNewTestamentwasnotdescribedbytheinspired writersasadenomination. Infact,theideaofChristianitybeingsplitintovari- ousdivisionsordenominationsgoesagainstthecon- ceptsfoundintheNewTestament.Paulmadethispoint tothechurchinCorinth:“Ibeseechyoubrothersbythe nameofourLordJesusChristthatyouallspeakthesame thingandthattherebenodivisionsamongyou”(1Co- rinthians1:10).Hereisapassagethatsaysdivisionsare notsupposedtoexist.“Lettherebenodivisionsamong you.”Ifadenominationisa“designateddivision,”then denominationalismisclearlyagainstthewillofChrist (John17:20-21).Thepassagecontinues,“butthatyou beperfectlyjoinedtogetherinthesamemindandinthe samejudgment.” ItisclearwhenwegototheBiblethat denominationalism,thoughviewedinnocentlybymil- lionsofpeopleworldwide, isanapproachtoreligionthat isoutofharmonywithNewTestamentteaching.
