Friendly! General Meeting: January 19th @ 10 am at Fabric Warehouse Welcome to the December issue of the LMQG newsletter! Sew Day: January 25th @ 1 pm JUST BECAUSE ITS HAND MADE DOESN'T at Fabric Warehouse MEAN ITS CHEAP! *Potluck* L M Q G The Salt Water Pillow Don’t forget to plan to join us on January 25th to create this super cute pillow by Tula Pink. We will have extra copies of the pattern available if you need it, but please come prepared with your supplies. This will be a FUN project! Our mug rugs are safe and sound in their Canadian new home! Are you as excited as I am about receiving the mug rugs that they exchange with us? I can’t wait to see them! If you missed out on this FUN swap, don’t worry! You have another chance! The Brisbane Australia Modern Quilt Guild would also like to do a mug rug swap with us! So start thinking about exciting mug rug ideas and bring them to the FEBRUARY General Meeting! L M Q G Name Tag Challenge Our first challenge of 2015 will be a fun one! Let’s get to know one another and show off our creativity at the same time. We will be creating our own name tags! I have used printable fabric and created 20 fabric LMQG logos that can be used on your name tags. We are asking that you try to stick with a 4” by 3” size. We are also asking that members use the colors that are used in our logo - that way no matter how different each name tag ends up being - they will all be similar (will make it fun when we wear them on outings or to public events!). The printed fabric logos will be at Fabric Warehouse (in a baggy in the “hold drawer” labeled with the guild name), so just stop by and pick up one whenever you are close by. If you need some inspiration, check out Pinterest, CLICK HERE. or on FlickR, CLICK HERE .I’m very excited to see what amazing and creative things that you all come up with! L M Q G By now I’m sure you have seen our QuiltCon Charity Quilt. How exciting is it to know that it will be on display in Austin, Texas at QuiltCon in 2015? What an amazing and fun first project it was too! It was a bit daunting to take this on as a brand new guild - but we completed it and it looks fantastic! After QuiltCon, it will be returned to us and we will be donating it to the Florida Baptist Children’s Home. L M Q G Our guild has the opportunity to have a FREE booth at the Lakeland Sewing Expo in March 2015. This is an incredible opportunity to not only grow our guild, but to help fund it for the upcoming year as well! We will be allowed to create an “Opportunity Quilt” and sell tickets at the Expo. With the thousands of people who file through the venue, this is an amazing opportunity to grow our guild account! All of the funds will be staying inside our guild and will be used for future educational opportunities, speakers and other fun things. We will be circulating a sign-up sheet for guild members to choose their desired times to help run the booth. We MUST have it occupied with guild members at all times, that is the one stipulation in order for us to be allowed the booth space. Any guild member who volunteers will receive entrance into the Expo for free on that day. We are asking for members to sign up for 4 hour slots, but we can work with you if you need it. Please take this opportunity to help the guild grow. We will be discussing our options for the “Opportunity Quilt” at the January meeting. Lets all work together on this and take full advantage of this fundraising effort that will benefit all of us. L M Q G FREE PATTERN The “Modern Mirror Quilt”. This quilt was featured in the Summer 2013 issue of Modern Quilts Unlimited Magazine. You can download the free pdf pattern here: CLICK HERE L M Q G 2015 Guild Dues are due at the January 19th General Meeting. Please make checks payable to The Lakeland Modern Quilt Guild. Colleen, our Treasurer, will be collecting them. Thank you! L M Q G Member Spotlight meet Kathleen Kull
I have been sewing since I was a little girl and still consider myself primarily a garment constructor.  I had dabbled with quilting before, but in the past 2 years I have more seriously taken up quilting, even purchasing a machine I can straight line quilt with. I found that although I loved the fabric choosing and piecing process I despised hand quilting-machine quilting is much better :). I enjoy sewing and quilting and still cross stitch a little. I am also involved in our church where my husband, Jim, and I teach preschool Sunday school and I lead ladies Bible Studies. My family has lived in the Lakeland area for the last 14 years although our children are now growing up and starting to move across the country. I am truly excited about being the guild charity officer! How great to be able to take something we all love and share it with the community in a meaningful way! I am looking forward to sharing the years charity projects with you all. Kathleen L M Q G We currently need someone who is willing to help with the guild’s Instagram page. Just keeping it alive and helping us to keep the networking going with people in the industry. If you have some Instagram-skill and a bit of free time, we would much appreciate the help! Don’t forget - we will start making bibs for the Achievement Academy in 2015. They have reached out to us for help with making bibs for their disabled students (they serve birth to young teen). Kathleen is putting together more information to share it at the Jan General Meeting. There will be some sample patterns to share also.
