Each entry provides the following information: title of resource grade(s) authorized for type of authorization (student support, authorized teaching) LRC order number and price (if available) type of resource (text, video, CD-ROM) copyright date. Annotation (includes a description of the resource as well as comments and sensitive issues). Italian LanguageandCulture Resources (3-, 6-and 12-yearprograms) / iii ©Alberta Education, Alberta, Canada March 2006 (Draft) RESOURCE AUTHORIZATION CATEGORIES NEW ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE RESOURCES This list contains Italian language and culture resources that have been authorized for use in Alberta schools. Alberta Education selects and authorizes the best possible instructional materials for the implementation of approved programs of study. The resource authorization categories are student basic, student support or teaching, and the status is noted for each resource. Student Basic learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Education as the most appropriate for addressing the majority of outcomes ofthe course(s) or substantial components ofthe course(s); or the most appropriate for meeting general outcomes across two or more grade levels. Student Support learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Education to assist in addressing some ofthe outcomes ofthe course(s) or components ofthe course(s); or to assist in meeting the outcomes across two or more grade levels. Teaching resources are those teaching resources identified as the best available resources to support the implementation of programs of study and courses; they may be teacher guides to accompany student resources or teacher professional resources. The authorized teaching guides are listed with the student resources. The list of these resources is organized alphabetically by title. Note: Alberta Education strongly recommends that teachers read all selections in the student resources and all activities in the teacher guides prior to using them with students. Careful consideration should be given to the sensitivities of both the student audience and the community. Note: For September 2006, the Italian Language and Culture 10-20-30 program will be relabelled as Italian Language and Culture 10-3Y, 20-3Y, 30-3Y. All resources authorized for 10-20-30 will be authorized for 10-3Y, 20-3Y, 30-3Y. • Six-year Program The Italian Language and Culture 7-8-9, 10S-20S-30S program is intended for students who are beginning their study of Italian language and culture in junior high school. Note: For September 2006, the Italian Language and Culture 10S-20S-30S program will be relabelled as Italian Language and Culture 10-6Y, 20-6Y, 30-6Y. All resources authorized for 10S-20S-30S will be authorized for 10-6Y, 20-6Y, 30-6Y. Twelve-year Program The Italian Language and Culture K-12 program is intended for students who are beginning their study of Italian language and culture in Kindergarten or Grade 7. THE CONCEPTUAL MODEL The aim of the Italian language and culture programs of study is the development of communicative competence in Italian. Four Components Forthe purposes of the programs of study, communicative competence is represented by four interrelated and interdependent components. Applications deal with what the students will be able to do with the language, the functions they will be able to perform and the contexts in which they will be able to operate. Language Competence addresses the students' knowledge ofthe language and their ability to use that knowledge to interpret and produce meaningful texts appropriate to the situations in which they are used. Global Citizenship aims to develop intercultural competence, with a particular focus on culture ofthe Italian-speaking world. Strategies help students learn and communicate more effectively and more efficiently. Each of these components is described more fully in the programs of study.
