The text of ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard without deviations. Certain terminology and conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention is drawn especially to the following: a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be read as ‘Indian Standard’. b) Comma (,) has been used as adecimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practice is to use a point (.) as the decimal marker. Inthis adopted standard, reference appears to certain International Standards for which Indian Standards also exist. The corresponding Indian Standards, which are to be substituted in their place, are listed below along with their degree of equivalence for the editions indicated: International Standard Corresponding Indian Standard Degree of Equivalence ISO 898-2 : 1992 Mechanical IS 1367 (Part 6): 1994 Technical supply Identical ~‘ properties of fasteners — Part 2: conditions for threaded steel fasteners: Nuts with specified proof load Part 6 Mechanical properties and test values — Coarse thread methods for nuts with specified proof loads (third revision) ISO 898-6 : 1994 Mechanical IS13096:2000 Fasteners — Hexagon nuts do properties of fasteners — Part 6 : with specified proof load values — Fine Nuts with specified proof load pitch threads — Mechanical properties (first values — Fine pitch thread revision) ISO 2320:1997 Prevailing torque IS 1367 (Part 8) :2002 Technical supply do type steel hexagon nuts — conditions for threaded steel fasteners: Mechanical and performance Part 8 Prevailing torque type steel hexagon properties nuts — Mechanical and performance properties (third revision) ISO 6157-2:1995 Fasteners IS 1367 (Part 10) :2002 Technical supply do Surface discontinuities — Part 2: conditions for threaded steel fasteners: Nuts Part 10 Surface discontinuities — Nuts (third revision) For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2:1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. IS 15569:2005 ISO 10484:1997 Indian Standard WIDENING TEST ON NUTS 1 Scope This International Standard specifies the test procedure for evaluating the acceptability of surface discontinuities designated inISO6157-2 excluding nuts made offree cutting steel. Itapplies to nutswith - property classesto ISO898-2 and ISO898-6; —nominal thread diameter, d,from 5mm upto and including 39 mm; - product grades Aand B. 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference inthis text, constitute provisions ofthis International Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers ofcurrently valid International Standards. ISO898-2:1992, Mechanical properties of fasteners - Part2:Nuts with specified proof /oad values - Coarse thread. ISO898-6:1994, Mechanical propeffies of fasteners - Part6:Nuts with specified proof load values - Fine pitch thread. ISO2320:1997, Prevailing torque type steel hexagon nuts- Mechanical and performance properties, ISO6157-2:1995, Fasteners - Surface discontinuities - Part2:Nuts. 3 Widening test 3.1 Principle After removal ofthethread upto the nominal thread diameter atapered mandrel ispushed into the nut. The widening ismeasured asapercentage ofthe hole diameter. 3.2 Test mandrel Thetest mandrel shown infigure 1shall be usedfor measurement ofwidening of 6 or 4% respectively (see ‘Y. clause 4). It shall have a minimum hardness of not less than 45 HRC and the cone shall be polished {roughnessR.= 2,5urn). 3.3 Test nut The nutto besubjected tothe widening test shall have the thread removed to adiameter equal tothe nomina, diameter ofthe thread with the tolerance H12. 1 ,. IS 15569:2005 1s0 10484:1997 3.4 Procedure Priortothe test, lubricate the mandrel with molybdenum disulphide (MoS,). Insertthe mandrel intothe nut asshown infigure 2and apply a load axially inaslow and continuous manner untilthe mandrel ispushed through the hole uptothe cylindrical part. The mandrel shall betightly clamped at the upper end. Forreference purposes the speed of insertion shall notexceed 25 mm/min. 4 Criteria . The total widening of nutsshall be 6%for nutsof property classes 4to 12 and 4%for nuts ofproperty classes04 and 05. Failure of a nut occurs when the wall ofthe nut breaks entirely before the minimum specified widening value is obtained. In cases of doubt, the fracture may be recognized when the nut iscut on the opposite side and then falls intotwo single parts. 5 Special case - Prevailing torque type nuts For prevailing torque type nutsaccording to ISO2320 the minimum value ofwidening shall be20 below the ‘?XO values for hexagon nutsspecified in4. t 2 IS 15569:2005 ISO 10484:1997 Tolerances inmillimetres Tolerances in millimetres 0,03 /=11 i IQ+’J’’)’” +I +P E u-l -- dhll 1)d k the nominal thread diameter of the nut.
