Portland-pozzolana cement can be produced either by grinding together Portland cement clinker and pozzolana with addition ofgypsum or calcium sulphate, or byintimatelyand uniformly blending Portland cementandfine pozzolana. While grindingofthe two materialstogetherpresentsno difficulty, themixingofdrypowdersuniformly is extremely difficult. The blendingmethod should, therefore, be resorted to only when thegrindingmethod is impossible or proves uneconomical in a particular case. Whereblendingmethod is adopted, everycare should be taken to see that the blendingis as intimate as possible. Generally, if the blending isnot uniform, it is reflected in the performancetests. The SectionalCommittee responsible for the preparation ofthis specification is of the opinion that the blending method should be confined to factories and such other workswhere intimate and uniform blending is feasible withthe employmentofrequisite machinerysoas to ensure uniformity of produc tion and guaranteed performance. Portland-pozzolana cement produces less heat of hydration and offers greater resistance to the attack of aggrcsxivc waters than normal Portland cement. Moreover, it reduces the leaching of calciumhydroxide liberated during thesettingand hydrationof cement. It is particularly useful in marineand hydraulic construction and other mass concrete structures. Portland-pozzolana cementcan generally be used wherever 33 grade ordinary Portland cement isusable under normal conditions. However, it should be appreciated that all pozzolanas need not necessarily contribute to strength at earlyages. In view ofthis fact, this present spccificution has been preparedto enable manufacturers to producePortlund-pozzolana cement equivalent to 33gradeordinary Portland cement on the basis of 3, 7and 28-days compressive strength. for constructionofstructuresusingrapid constructionmethods like slipf'orrn construction, Portland pozzolanacement shaHbe used with caution since4to 6 hstrength of concrete is significant in such construction. Thisstandardwas first published in 1962and subsequently revised in 1967and 1976. In this revision the standard has been split into two partsbased on the pozzolana used in the manufactureofsuch cementsin view ofthe special needs of some hydraulic structures which require pozzolanacement manufactured onlywith flyash pozzolana and for easy identification of pozzolana used in themanu facture ofPortland-pozzolana cement in the interest of consumers. Part 1of this standard covers pozzolana cementmanufactured by using only fly ash pozzolana and Part 2coverspozzolana cement manufactured by using eithercalcined clayor amixtureofcalcined clay and flyashas pozzolana. In this revision both chemicaland physical requirements have been kept the sameas was given in 1976 versionof thisstandard as amended from time to time. Various requirements of Portland-pozzolana cementgiven in 1976 version ofthis standard had been modified from timeto time by issuingamend ments based on the experiencegained with the use ofthe standard and the requirementsof theusers andalsokeeping in view the rawmaterialsandfuel available in the countryfor manufactureofcement The important amendments include loweringthe valueof compressive strength in lime reactivity testfrom 5MPa to 4 MPa. incorporatinga valueof3day compressive strength as 16MPa, modifying the requirement ofsulphuric anhydride ( SOs) and insoluble residue, deleting the requirement of pozzolanicitytest, increasingthe value of28 days compressive strenth from 31MPato 33 MPa,making autoclave soundness tcst compulsory irrespectiveofthe magnesia content in cement, incorporating a provision for retest in respect ofautoclave soundness tcstafter aerationofthe cement, incorporting a clauseon false set ofcement and perrnitting packagingof cement in 25kg bags. A11 these amend ments have beentaken careof in this revision. Massof cement packed in bagsand the tolerance requirements for the mass ofcement packed in bags shallbe inaccordance with the relevant provisionsofthe Standardof Weightsand Measures (Packaged Commodities) Rules. 1977and 8-1.2 (see Annex B). Any modification in these rutes in rcspcct of tolerance on massofcement would apply automatically to this standard.
