Norton & Company has been independent since its founding in 1923, when William Warder Norton and Mary D. Herter Norton first published lectures delivered at the People’s Institute, the adult education division of New York City’s Cooper Union. The Nortons soon expanded their program beyond the Institute, publishing books by celebrated academics from America and abroad. By mid-century, the two major pillars of Norton’s publishing program—trade books and college texts—were firmly established. In the 1950s, the Norton family transferred control of the company to its employees, and today with a staffo ff our hundred and a comparable number of trade, college, and professional titles published each year—W. W. Norton & Company stands as the largest and oldest publishing house owned wholly by its employees. Copyright © 2006 by W. W. Norton & Company, Inc. Copyright © 1992 by H. AFS ano CHJ About the Authors H. ROBERT BURGER (Ph.D. 1966, Indiana University) is Achilles Professor of Geology at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. His research focuses on the evolution of ancient mountain belts in south- western Montana, applying geophysics to further elucidate the struc- tural evolution of the Connecticut Valley in Massachusetts, and using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to mitigate natural hazards. In addition to research articles and papers, Burger also co-authored An Introduction to Structural Methods. ANNE F. SHEEHAN (Ph.D. 1991, MIT) is Associate Professor of Geological Sciences and Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her research focuses on the study of the crust and upper mantle of the Earth and its relation to tectonic deformation. She has conducted field studies in many regions including the Rocky Mountains, the Himalaya, and New Zealand. Dr. Sheehan teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in geological sciences and geophysics, and has served as Director of the University of Colorado Geophysics Ph.D. program. CRAIG H. JONES (Ph.D. 1987, MIT) is Associate Professor of Geological Sciences and Fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His research has focused on understanding the tectonics of continen- tal areas, especially the western U.S., and on obtaining geophysical observations of those features. He teaches undergraduate and gradu- ate courses in geology and geophysics and has developed and main- tained geophysical software for more than 15 years. vi
