He published a variety of articles, books and edited volumes on Spanish syntax, semantics, pragmatics, philosophy of language and the arts. Some of his works are fundamental readings in Hispanic linguistics, since they offer an introductory reference view for students and researchers in the field. Among these studies, it is worth pointing out Semantics: Critical Concepts (Routledge, 2003), Fundamentos de Sintaxis Formal [Foundations of Formal Syntax] (Akal, 2009, coauthored with Ignacio Bosque) and Enciclopedia de Lingüística Hispánica [Encyclopedia of Hispanic Linguistics] (Routledge, 2016). Other works of equal significance, which are more specialized in nature and, consequently, directed to a narrower public, are From Words to Discourse (Elsevier, 2002), La semántica de los indefinidos [The Semantics of Indefinites] (Visor, 2004) and Interfaces and Domains of Quantification (The Ohio State University Press, 2014). Professor Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach’s research on Spanish linguistics ranged over a variety of topics, such as exclamative and interrogative sentences, clitics, quantification, bare nouns, nominal and verbal ellipses and agreement, to mention just a few. His work was characterized by a combination of originality and preci- sion; some of it was of a remarkably pioneering nature and most likely cannot be fully appreciated until time lends perspective. He will be truly missed by his students, colleagues and friends.
