Realizing the need of preparing a class of competent Law professionals to meet the requirements of society, Kurukshetra University took up the responsibility of establishing the Institute of Law on the campus in 2001 to start B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) 5 Year Integrated Course. The Institute is constantly innovating legal education to attract the young talent. The Institute, since its inception, has set standards for achieving excellence and promotes commitment to serve the community. It aims at producing Law professionals capable of confronting and overcoming the challenges of the 21st century. It is gratifying to find that the focus of this course is on overall development of personality along with professional excellence. I am glad to learn that the Institute is going to bring out the Prospectus for 2011. I am sure that in view of its wide repute of imparting quality Legal Education, the Institute will be able to admit a highly competitive batch for the current academic session. I take this opportunity to welcome and felicitate the new entrants to the Institute. AGARWAL LL.M., Ph.D. Director, Institute of Law Kurukshetra University From the Director's Desk The Institute of Law, Kurukshetra University since its inception in 2001 catering a very significant need of the young talent after 10+2 to go for the highly demanding professional B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) 5 Year Integrated course. Our aim is to produce promising lawyers with a sense of confidence and conviction which are sine qua non of the legal professionals. We tap the young talent and cast them in an appropriate mould through intensive learning programmes. While interacting with the young mind, we lay emphasis on the rigorous education, training and skill development in an interdisciplinary context of law and Social Sciences. The emphasis is to look at law as an instrument of social change and progress and to inculcate amongst the students a high degree of professionalism and a sense of responsibility to the society. While designing the course structure, we have taken a special care to incorporate in the curriculum the new emerging areas of contemporary relevance and importance such as Corporate Law, Cyber Law, Intellectual Property Laws, Human Right Laws, etc. The moot- courts, mock-trials, court visits, Law debates, quiz contest, and socio-legal-projects are the other salient features forming the inbuilt component of the curriculum. In order to acquaint the students and the faculty with the latest developments in the field of Law, the Institute invites the distinguished Professors, Judges and Advocates from time to time for special lectures. We are striving hard to make this Institute a class of its own under the guidance and blessings of the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Dr. D.D.S. Sandhu. Controller of Examinations Dr. Hukam Singh 238377 M.Phil, Ph.D. 4 KURUKSHETRA UNIVERSITY The land of Mahabharata and Srimadbhagavadgita witnessed the birth of Kurukshetra University in 1956. Situated on the plains of the river Saraswati on the western bank of the famous Brahm Sarovar, the foundation stone of the University was laid on 11th January 1957 by the Late Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. The University which started with focus on Sanskrit and Indic Studies took a big leap forward in 1961 by transforming its initial character into a multi-faculty university. Together, the twelve faculties on the campus with 46 departments provide a mix of professional, interdisciplinary and traditional courses. New programmes in emerging areas like Defence Studies, Nano Science & Technology, Genomics, Internet Journalism, International Hospitality Business Management, Women Studies, Forensic Science, Management of Development and Welfare Services, Microelectronics and VLSI design, Printing, Graphics & Packaging, Multimedia, etc. have been added to the list of courses on offer to the learners. Accredited with an 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore, the University today enjoys a sound reputation and is eagerly sought by seekers of quality education in conformity with international standards. The University offers students from throughout the region, state and nation a world-class education by providing learning experience designed to develop intellectual abilities, as well as, social moral and ethical values. In its commitment to quality sustenance and enhancement, the University monitors and evaluates its strategies on improving the process of teaching-learning and evaluation. To this 5 endeavour, mechanism like regular feedback from students and other shareholders like alumni, industry, academic peers, employers, community, etc. are actively practiced. Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), constituted as per guidelines of NAAC and UGC, is functioning as a nodal body on the campus. Research is an integral and very significant activity of the University and the faculty members are involved in it with dedication. Faculty members have been successful in bringing in large funds from various agencies like DST, UGC, DRDO, DBT, UNDP, World Bank (TEQUIP), etc. under different schemes. The numbers of FIST, SAP and TEQUIP assisted departments in the University has also increased to 15. The University has a beautiful and quiet campus spread over 400 acres of land with sylvan surroundings and the best infrastructure available. The campus has a Centrally Air- conditioned Auditorium with a seating capacity of 2500 and a 70 mm Projector, a Senate Hall, Conference Hall, a well-developed Sports Complex (Playgrounds, Gymnasium, Stadium, Swimming Pool, Tennis Courts, Volleyball Courts, Basketball Courts, etc.), Yoga Centre, Computer Centre, Health Centre, Open Air Theatre, etc. There is a spacious and well- equipped air-conditioned Central Library fully Computerized with Internet facilities. The University at present has 22 Hostels- 09 for Boys, 1 for foreign Male students and 12 for Girls on the sprawling campus of University. Adequate and well-furnished hostel facilities exist for male and female students. The neat and clean hostel premises carry the advantage of sprawling lawns and charming flower beds. The University has received 'Green Campus of the Year 2010' Award from the World Management Congress, New Delhi. The University is committed towards a holistic development of its students. Ample opportunities are provided to those participating in different co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Managed by the Directorate of Youth and Cultural Affairs, these activities include youth festivals at zonal, inter-zonal, inter-University and national levels as well as various other cultural activities. Five years ago the University started a unique public speaking competition for students called 'Rostrum'. This popular event attracts several hundred students as speakers on issues of societal concern and other issues of national and international concern. Students are actively associated with NCC and NSS programmes. The University is situated in pollution-free environment at a distance of about 9 Kms from Pipli on the Delhi-Chandigarh National Highway and 4 Kms from Kurukshetra Railway Junction on the Delhi-Ambala section of the Northern Railway. 6 INSTITUTE OF LAW In order to meet the challenges of globalization and liberalization and to develop an institution of excellence in legal education, Kurukshetra University established the Institute of Law in the Year 2001 on its campus to offer 5-year Integrated Law Course. The object of the Institute is to disseminate legal knowledge that meets the demands of the fast changing economic, political and social institutions. The emphasis is to look at law as an instrument of social change and progress and to inculcate amongst students high degree of professionalism with a sense of responsibility towards the society. The Institute is housed in its own building on the campus, the foundation stone of which was laid by the Hon'ble Mr. Justice Dr. A. S. Anand, the then Chief Justice of India. It is a modern building complex having a compact area of 60,000 square feet with all the infrastructural facilities, comparable to the best in any national law school in our country. While faculty and the students comprise the essential human factors in education, the endeavour cannot prosper without adequate library and computer facilities. The Institute provides the students with a variety of academic and support resources to enhance their knowledge and skills. To acquaint the students and the faculty with the latest developments in the field of Law, the Institute invites the distinguished Professors, Judges and Advocates from time to time for special lectures. 7 LIBRARY & COMPUTER LAB LIBRARY FACILITIES The Institute has its own library well-stocked with books on Law and other allied subjects with a spacious reading hall. The Institute subscribes all the leading Law Reports and Journals of National and International repute including Harvard Law Review. The students have a free access to the University Central Library with 'ERNET' facilities and the Library of the Department of Law. COMPUTER LAB To be aware of the recent innovations computer technology has become pre-requisite for any field of knowledge. It is all the more true in the case of legal field. The Institute boasts of a well-equipped Computer Lab to cater the need of the law students in the field of computer education. Apart from equipping the students with the basic theoretical knowledge, they are provided with Networking facility and the software of Law Encyclopedia. Besides, the students have a free access to the Computer Centre of the University 8 COURSE SPECIALS B.A.LL.B. (HONS.) The Institute started a whole time 5-Year Integrated Course of B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) from the academic session 2001-02. The sixth batch of the course shall be out in July 2011. All admissions are made strictly according to the merit drawn on the basis of an All India Entrance Test. The Entrance Test is conducted with the aim and object to evaluate the communication skill, general awareness, analytical and reasoning ability of the candidates. The course contents are a unique combination of Law in theory and action and other allied subjects. New emerging areas in Law, like Cyber Laws, Intellectual Property Laws, Human Rights Laws, Women and the Laws, Environment Protection Laws, Corporate Laws, etc. have been included in the syllabi. Interactive Learning In order to train the budding lawyers, the faculty employs a mix of learning tools aimed at providing sound conceptual knowledge and realistic situations for problem solving and decision making. Moot Courts, Practical Training in Courts, Work in Lawyers' Chambers, Tutorials, Seminars, Project Reports, Debates, Quiz Contests, etc. are inbuilt part of the course curriculum, as the performance of each student in all these is to be evaluated. In order to provide due exposure to the students and teachers, distinguished Jurists, senior Advocates, eminent Professors are invited to deliver extension lectures, conduct seminars and discussions. These programmes make law teaching not only more meaningful but practice-oriented with due emphasis on court procedures and court-craft.
