Others would argue that there’s been millenniums since it first appeared, startingwiththeRomanEmpire,orevenbefore.Still,nooneisdebatingitsexistence orthefactthatitinfluencesthewayweconductouractivities,or,inabroadersense, ourlife.Economicdevelopmentistodayunthinkableoutsidethisframework,asit issimultaneouslycauseandeffectthereof.Asaconsequences,ourworld,increas- ingly “flat”, “hot” and “overcrowded” is facing major challenges, such as climate change,socialexclusion,poverty,tonamebutafew.Still,notmanyhaveraisedthe questionifthisphenomenaisreversible.Somedidconsiderthatthephenomenaof globalizationitselfisbeingalteredandmodified,butwhatoutcomemightthisbring forthefuture.Thispaperaimstoindicatepossiblescenarios,bysystemizingrecent contributions on the “New globalization” and by analyzing one of the most used indexformeasuringthisphenomena. · · Keywords Newglobalization Anti-globalization Protectionism 1 Introduction Globalization is a household concept, although it has many definitions and even scholarstryhardtofindageneralacceptedapproach.AccordingtoGeraldHelleiner theworditself“hasnowbecomesoslippery,soambiguous,sosubjecttomisunder- standingandpoliticalmanipulation,thatitshouldbebannedfromfurtheruse,atleast untilthereispreciseagreementastoitsmeaning”(Helleiner2006).Intheeconomic field, some consider it to be a process in which national economies have become increasingly integrated and interdependent.
