After dealing with innovation financing for small and medium-sized enterprises in the first conference, this year's subject was innovation networking. Many theoretical and empirical contributions from dif ferent disciplines showed that co-operation between different partners is an essential prerequisite for successful innovation. The lonely inventor, who brings his inven tion to the market by founding his own business, the scenario Schumpeter had in mind in his early work, is far from being realistic. Only by co-operation, and thus networking, can so far unused economic and innovative potentials be exploited. While the scientific community made many theoretical and empirical contributions to the explanation of networks, many questions still remain open. For example: how can networks, if they do not emerge on their own, be initiated; how can fragmenta tion in innovation systems be overcome, and how can networking experiences from market economies be transferred to the emerging economies of Central and Eastern Europe? Policy-makers need to know more about the success factors of networking and network promotion, even though network stimulation is already on the political agenda. Policy-makers' interest in these issues was documented by the fact that the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) sponsored this conference. The par ticipation of several representatives of different Central and Eastern European Countries was made possible by a grant from the Volkswagen Foundation. This financial support contributed significantly to the successful realisation of the con ference. Thanks to the help of many people involved in organising this event, it was possible for the approximately 150 participants to spend two interesting days in Karlsruhe. We thank the authors for their contributions, but special thanks go to Susanne Win ter-Haitz and Christine Schadel with whose invaluable help we were able to com pile this volume. Since most of the authors revised their paper after the conference and included discussion remarks, the volume not only offers a selection of confer ence papers, but gives the reader an impression of the different subjects which were presented and discussed during the two days in Karlsruhe.
