CP912 1733M1I Index INDEX TO THE MOSELEY MAP OF NC 1733 Susan M. Trimble THE LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL THE COLLECTION OF NORTH CAROLINIANA PRESENTED BY NC Div. of Archives and History Historical Publication Section Cp912 1733ml Index JrJcx INDEX TO THE MOSELEY MAP OF NORTH CAROLINA, 1733 Every entr y appearing on the Moseley Map of 1733 is included in the fol lowing ind ex A grid reference, based on the latitude . marks aiready existing on the map and longitude marks three inches apart, has been assi gned to each entry (e.g. Al, B8). The blocks thus created are let tered from A to I down the side of the map and numbered f rom 1 to 10 across the map. The reference , assigned correspond s to the block in which the first letter of the entry appears If the entry begins on a line of the grid it . is considered to be in the block where the major portion falls, By and large the spell ings of the alphabetized entries in this index are as they appear on the map. Modern spellings and name have not been inc 1ud ed Certain terms, such as creek, inlet and river have i n some instances been expanded to avoid , confusi on . When a name appears more than once, although not in the same lace the references have been combined, p , Groupings of similar entries have been made where possible (e.g ereeks plantations towns, rivers) and the grouped entry . , , , printed in bold When a name appears with a single dot as an . indicator of i ts locat ion and it cannot be determined whether or not it is a town or sett lement, it is placed in the plantations group. When the pro per group of a term could not be determined with relati ve cer taint y , it was not placed in any group. When a word is printed in braekets the information in the brackets , merely clarifies an unusual abbreviation. If [reference to] appears af ter an entry the term is referred to in the , correspond ing block but does not itself appear in the block. The directi ons for the nav igation of Ocacock Inlet have been indexed as a whole There are approximately 820 main entries. Susan M Trimble .
