I was both monumentally moved and genuinely impressed by these real-life, awe-inspiring stories and the manner in which they so vividly illustrate the human and professional benefits of evidence-based practice. Sincere thanks to all those who so kindly shared their stories, which demon- strate the courage, conviction, and resilience needed to drive EBP steadfastly forward. To Bern and Ellen, thank you for this beautiful string of pearls that no conscientious health care practitioner can afford to be without!” –Joanne Cleary-Holdforth, RGN, RM, Cert in Renal Nursing, BSc (Hons), MSc (Hons), PG Dip in Third Level Learning & Teaching. Cert in EBP Mentorship (ASU) Lecturer in Nursing, Dublin City University, Ireland “All too often, the word ‘research’ causes a nurse’s eyes to glaze over. On the other hand, nurses love stories, both to tell and hear. In this book, Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt have very cleverly combined storytelling with research to demonstrate the importance of using evidence to guide nursing care interventions and decision-making. The stories in this collection are by turns compelling, emotional, humorous, and sobering, but all keep evidence-based practice as the primary focus, reinforcing its role as the driver of predict- able patient outcomes through high quality care.” –Leslie H. Nicoll, PhD, MBA, RN Principal and Owner, Maine Desk LLC, Professional Editorial Services IEBP.indb 1 5/19/11 7:47:49 AM “This compilation of stories will make a difference in your nursing practice, whether you are a new or seasoned practitioner. The authors have captured many in- spirational stories to lift our spirits and reinvigorate our passion for building our science upon the art of nursing through evidence-based practice. These heartwarming stories are a reminder of the power of nursing.” –Laura Cullen, MA, RN, FAAN Evidence-Based Practice Coordinator University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics “Drs. Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt have compiled an impressive collection of stories of how nurses use evidence to make a difference and influence care on the front lines. Nurses at all levels of practice will benefit from reading the real-life examples of how their nursing colleagues are putting evidence into practice. This powerful book dem- onstrates the passion, commitment, and accountability of nurses to patients and to the profession. A chief nursing officer recently told me that the majority of her clinicians were burnt-out and practicing in a coma of complacency, which not only adversely affects their colleagues, but has a detrimental effect on patients. I have seen firsthand through- out the United States and the globe how EBP reignites passion in clinicians and moti- vates them to deliver a higher quality of care to their patients. I have also seen firsthand how the lack of evidence-based care results in major medical errors, including nearly losing my youngest daughter, which you will read about in the story, entitled “Kaylin’s Story: Australian Dream Trip Turned Nightmare.” As you read the powerful stories in this book about how clinicians transformed practice and improved their patients’ out- comes through EBP, you will reignite your passion for why you first chose your profes- sion and rekindle your commitment to deliver the highest quality of care possible for the benefit of your patients and family members. Ellen Fineout-Overholt As I read the stories in this book about how clinicians are making a daily difference in patients’, families’, and providers’ lives, they reinforce my core belief and value of how important each of us is to health care outcomes. My husband and I have two young daughters. I want my children to have health care professionals who care enough about their best outcomes to be the best at what they do (i.e., bring in their expertise); seek out the best science and other knowledge to apply to care; include our daughters’ (and our) preferences when making decisions about care; and evaluate whether the treatments, programs, and initiatives they engage actually achieve the expected outcome—that is, I want our daughters to have evidence-based care. This book is dedicated to the nurses who shared their stories with Bern and me and to my precious girls, Rachael and Ruth. I wish you all a long, healthy, vibrant life! IEBP.indb 5 5/19/11 7:47:49 AM Acknowledgements Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk I want to thank and recognize all of the clinicians who contributed their wonderful stories to this book, which I believe is such a treasure. I have been so blessed to travel throughout the United States and the globe, working with nurses and transdisciplinary clinicians in health care systems to advance and sustain evidence-based practice (EBP). What I have learned from them and their stories continually reignites my passion for always working to take our professions to greater heights for the ultimate purpose of enhancing the quality of health care and improving patients’ health and lives. I could not accomplish all that I do without the loving support of my husband, John, and my three wonderful daughters, Kaylin, Angela and Megan. They have sacrificed much so that others could benefit, and for that, I can never thank them enough. I also want to thank my very dear friend and colleague, Ellen Fineout-Overholt, for her unwavering commitment over the past 12 years in working tirelessly with me to advance our efforts in improving health care and impacting lives in such a positive way through EBP. I am truly blessed with my family, friendships, and colleagues. In addition, I want to thank and recognize Kathy York, who has been instrumental in the support of my work and a never-failing source of encouragement. Lastly, thanks to the publishing team at Sigma Theta Tau International, including Janet Boivin, Carla Hall, and Renee Wilmeth, who have all been terrific in the production of this work. Ellen Fineout-Overholt It was a joy to edit and contribute to this book. It was wonderful to read about evidence- based clinicians making a remarkable difference in how patients and families experience health care and the associated outcomes on a daily basis. I thank each of you for invest- ing in your careers and sharing your stories with others—to inspire, encourage, and challenge us all to provide the best care possible. Special thanks to Kathy York and Deb- bie Relph for their assistance with e-mails and record keeping. Bern and I are indebted to the publishing team at Sigma Theta Tau International who care so deeply for the nursing profession, particularly Janet Boivin, Carla Hall, and Renee Wilmeth. Ellen Fineout-Overholt, PhD, RN, FNAP, FAAN Dr. Fineout-Overholt is currently Clinical Professor and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Evidence-Based Practice at Arizona State University. Dr. Fineout- Overholt earned her BSN from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, her MSN in Cardiovascular Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and her PhD in Nursing Research from the University of Rochester. Her primary role is assisting health care providers (i.e., nurses, doctors, and other providers) to care for patients using the evidence-based practice (EBP) paradigm, which blends the best sci- entific information available (i.e., research), the experience of the provider along with evidence from practice, and what patients value and prefer to accomplish the best health outcomes for that patient. Dr. Fineout-Overholt is best known for promoting EBP with clinicians across the United States and worldwide, both in the hospital and in the community. Dr. Fineout- Overholt, with her long-time colleague Dr. Bernadette Melnyk, developed the Advanc- ing Research & Clinical Practice through close Collaboration (ARCC) model. This model hinges on the strategic, central role of an EBP mentor to sustain improved health care outcomes. EBP mentors foster an environment that welcomes (a) inquiry; (b) inno- vation; and (c) solutions that are based on sound scientific and practice-based evidence and focused on improving health care outcomes. EBP mentors, educated in programs created by Dr. Fineout-Overholt, are making a difference in patient and systems out- comes all over the world. In addition, Dr. Fineout-Overholt’s innovative work to revise the foundation upon which nurses are educated to integrate EBP principles has been well received by faculty worldwide. Her publications and presentations, in the United States and abroad, focus on helping clinicians, health care faculty, and administrators improve practice through implementa- tion and sustainability of EBP. Dr. Fineout-Overholt’s research is devoted to developing and testing models of EBP in multiple settings. She is coeditor of the widely used book Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing & Healthcare: A Guide to Best Practice (Lippincott IEBP.indb 9 5/19/11 7:47:50 AM
