Preview II Chronicles: Introduction, Translation, and Notes (Anchor Bible)

II CHRONICLES THE ANCHOR BIBLE is a fresh approach to the world's greatest classic. Its object is to make the Bible accessible to the modem reader; its method is to arrive at the meaning of biblical literature through exact translation and extended exposition, and to recon struct the ancient setting of the biblical story, as well as the cir cumstances of its transcription and the characteristics of its tran scribers. THE ANCHOR BIBLE is a project of international and interfaith scope: Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish scholars from many coun tries contribute individual volumes. The project is not sponsored by any ecclesiastical organization and is not intended to reflect any par ticular theological doctrine. Prepared under our joint supervision, THE ANCHOR BIBLE is an effort to make available all the significant historical and linguistic knowledge which bears on the interpretation of the biblical record. THE ANCHOR BIBLE is aimed at the general reader with no special formal training in biblical studies; yet, it is written with the most exacting standards of scholarship, reflecting the highest technical ac complishment. This project marks the beginning of a new era of co-operation among scholars in biblical research, thus forming a common body of knowledge to be shared by all. Printed in the United States of America All Rights Reserved First Edition TRANSLATOR'S NOTE The biblical book of Chronicles is actually one book which, be cause of its length when translated from Hebrew into Greek, was divided into what we now know as I and II Chronicles. The di vision into two volumes has been retained here, but the interrelated ness of the two precluded two separate introductions that would, by avoiding repetition, tend to mislead the reader into thinking that I and II Chronicles were two distinct works. Therefore, the general introduction to the Chronicler's work ap pears at the beginning of I Chronicles, and a shorter introduction relevant specifically to II Chronicles-appears here. The appendixes for all of Chronicles are to be found at the end of II Chronicles. Appendix I gives a complete list of the parallel and comparative passages that the Chronicler drew upon for both I and II Chronicles; Appendix II contains genealogical charts based upon the first nine chapters of I Chronicles. Each volume also includes an index of place and personal names that appear in the biblical text of that volume, but if a name occurs in any other of the Chronicler's works (I and II Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah), all of these occurrences are cited in order to illustrate the basic unity of the narrative con tained in these volumes.
