Due to the restrictions and safety concernsintroducedbytheCOVID-19pandemic,theconferencewasheldonline,asa ZoomWebinar,duringJuly6–9,2020. Submissionsincludedfullresearchpapers,shortpapers,anddiscussionpapers.In addition,theconferencealsofeaturedtwokeynoteaddresses(byHelenPurchasefromthe UniversityofGlasgowandCharlesYoungofRhodesUniversity)andtwopresentations bysponsors(IITPSAandPearson).Thefocusoftheprimarytrackoftheconferencewas onpracticalexperiencesincomputingeducationatthetertiary/post-schoollevel,partic- ularlyclassroominnovations,noveltoolsforlearningand/orassessment,andresearch investigatingaspectsofcomputingeducation.Inaddition,submissionswerealsoinvited forasecondarytrackfocusingongeneralresearchinComputerScienceandInforma- tion Systems, which was intended to assist early-career academics with a welcoming platformtopresenttheirresearch. Allpapers,forbothtracks,wentthroughthesamedouble-blindreviewingprocess, and each paper received three reviews. The Program Committee comprised 33 inter- national and national researchers (see Organization).We wish to record our thanks to themembersoftheProgramCommitteewhowillinglygavetheirtimeandexpertiseto provideveryhelpfulandinsightfulreviewsofthesubmissions. Atotalof53papersweresubmitted.Afterreviewing,20paperswereacceptedfor presentationattheconferenceasfullresearchpapers.Aftertheconference,andfollowing a careful review of the full papers in the main track, the 13 best papers were selected for publication in this Springer volume (giving an acceptance rate of 24.5%). Prior to submissiontoSpringer,thesepaperswerereworkedbytheauthors,takingintoaccount thereviewers’commentsandfeedbackfromdelegatesattheconference.Theremainder of the full papers presented at the conference appear in a separate locally published proceedingsoftheconference. Thisyear,theawardforthebestpaperwasawardedtoKudzaiKatsidziraandLisa Seymourfortheirpaperentitled“FactorsImpactingUsingtheInternetforLearning:The DigitalDivideinSouthAfricanSecondarySchools”.Congratulationstotheauthorson researchtobeproudof! vi Preface Ourthanksgotoalltheauthorsandresearcherswhoentrusteduswiththeresultsof theirresearchandwriting.Anyconferenceisonlyasgoodastheworkthatissubmitted forpresentation,andwearedeeplygratefultoallwhocontributed,underthedifficult circumstances of a global pandemic and national lockdown, to make SACLA 2020 a greatsuccess. November2020 GeorgeWells MoneloNxozi BobbyTait Message from the Chairpersons SACLA 2020 had originally been planned to take place during July 6–8, 2020, at the MpekweniBeachResortinEasternCape.Wewerequitefarintoourpreparationswith the venue, when the COVID-19 pandemic struck South Africa. By early April it was becomingapparentthatholdinganin-personconferencemightnotbepossible,although atthatstagenoneofushadanyideaofthedisastrouseffecttheviruswouldhaveonour countryanditspeople.OnApril18,2020,beforeparticipantregistrationwasopened, theorganizingcommitteemadethefinaldecisiontoholdavirtualconferenceinstead. This was both a relief having actually made the decision, but also the start of a fairly stressfulperiodinthesensethatwehadtorestarttheplanningforavirtualconference, andfamiliariseourselvesrapidlywithtechnologytosupportthedecision. Weweremostgratefultoourthreesponsors,theInstituteofInformationTechnology Professionals,RhodesUniversity,andPearsonSouthAfrica,whocontinuedtosupport ourvirtualendeavour. Giventheworseningcircumstancesinourcountry,goingvirtualwasobviouslythe rightdecision.Wesincerelyhopethatalltheparticipantsfeltthatitwasaworthwhile alternative,althoughwerealizethatthesocializingandnetworkingaspectsofaface-to- faceconferenceweresorelymissed.Weare,however,confidentthatthedissemination ofsomeexcellentresearchwasachievedthroughtheonlinesessions. Having to deal with organizing a virtual conference certainly had its challenges. However,therewerealwayssolutionsonoffer,especiallyrelatedtotechnicallogistics, which was crucial to the success of the conference.
