WorkingwithALMClientMSIGeneratorinvolvesthefollowingsteps:
1. MakesurethatthemachineonwhichyouwanttoinstallandrunALMClientMSIGeneratormeets
theminimumrequirements.Formoreinformation,see"ALMClientMSIGeneratorPrerequisites
andConsiderations"below.
2. InstallALMClientMSIGeneratorfromtheHPALMAdd-inspage.Formoreinformation,see
"InstallingALMClientMSIGenerator"onthenextpage.
3. GenerateanALMClientMSIfile.Formoreinformation,see"GeneratingALMClientMSIFiles"on
thenextpage.
4. DeployALMclientcomponentsonworkstations.Formoreinformation,see"RunningALMClient
MSIFiles"onpage9.
ALM Client MSI Generator Prerequisites and
Considerations
Microsoft.NETFrameworkmustbeinstalledonthemachineonwhichyouwanttoinstallandrun
l
ALMClientMSIGenerator.VerifythatyouareusingacompatibleversionofMicrosoft.NET
Framework.Formoreinformation,refertotheSystemRequirementsintheHPALMClientMSI
GeneratorReadme.
ToinstallandrunALMClientMSIGenerator,andtorunALMclientMSIfiles,youmustloginwith
l
administratorprivileges.
HPALMClientMSIGeneratoronlysupportsmultipleindependentserverswiththesameversion
l
installed.Forexample,version12.53ofHPALMClientMSIGeneratorsupportsall12.5xALMversions.
ALMClientGeneratorsupportsALMserverswiththefollowingproxyorWebserverconfigurations:
l
Forwardproxywithnoauthenticationorwithbasicauthentication.
l
Reverseproxywithnoauthenticationorwithbasicauthentication.
l
WebserverwithbasicorNTLMauthentication.
l
Ifadoubleauthenticationschemeisused,MSIfilegenerationfails.
l
ToenablecommunicationwithanALMserverconfiguredforHTTPS,themachineonwhichyourun

ALMClientMSIGeneratormusthaveavalidSSLcertificate.
ALMClientMSIGeneratorcannotrunonanFDCCworkstation.
l
l External Authentication.HPALMClientMSIGeneratordoesnotfullysupportexternal
authentication,howeverthefollowingworkaroundcanbeusedtobypassexternalauthentication
whenusingMSIGenerator:
Whenexternalauthenticationisenabled,ALMClientMSIGeneratormustbeinstalledontheALM

server.TheServer AddressfieldmustcontaintheURLoftheALMserveronwhichALMClientMSI
Generatorisinstalled.
Example:
ALMserverisinstalledonamachinethatwillbeaccessedusinghttp://alm.com/qcbin.Let’s
assumethatthereissomeexternalauthenticationonthismachine.
GeneratetheMSIfileasfollows:
1. InstallMSIGeneratoronthealm.commachine.
2. SetthemainURLforMSIgeneratortohttp://localhost/qcbin.
WhenMSIGeneratorisdeployed,itaccessesanyserverwiththesameALMversioninstalled,
includingalm.com.
Installing ALM Client MSI Generator
ThissectiondescribeshowtoinstallALMClientMSIGenerator.
To install ALMClientMSI Generator:
1. OntheClientMSIGeneratoradd-inpage,clickDownloadHP ALMClientMSI Generator.The
ClientMSIGeneratorInstallerlaunches.
2. OntheSelectInstallationFolderpage,selectafolderinwhichtoinstallALMClientMSIGenerator,
oracceptthedefaultfolder.
3. Afterfilesareinstalledonyourmachine,clickFinishtoclosetheinstaller.
4. TocopysettingsofALMClientMSIGeneratorfromonemachinetoanother,copythedatfolder
andfilesfromtheinstallationdirectoryonthefirstmachinetotheinstallationdirectoryonthe
secondmachine.
Generating ALM Client MSI Files
UsetheALMClientMSIGeneratortogenerateanALMClientMSIfile.
GenerateanewMSIversioneachtimetheALMserverordatabaseschemasareupdated.Thisincludes
thefollowingcases:
Apatchisinstalled.
l
Anextensionisinstalled.
l
Anewtesttypeiscreated.
l
ALMserverconfigurationsarechanged.

TogenerateanALMClientMSIfile:
1. Logonwithadministratorprivileges.
Note:YoumustruntheALMClientMSIGeneratorlocally,andnotoveranetwork.
2. CloseanyopeninstancesoftheALMClientMSIGenerator,andofInternetExplorer.
3. RuntheHPALMClientMSIGenerator.TheGenerateClientMSI forHPALM Serverpageopens.
Alternatively,youcanexecutetheALMClientMSIGeneratorfromthecommandlineusing
commandlinearguments.Formoreinformation,execute“ClientMSIGenerator.exe/?”fromthe
commandline. 
4. IntheServer Addressfield,fillintheURLoftheALMservermachineforwhichyouwanttoa
createaclientMSI.Usethefollowingformat:
http://<ALMservername>[<:portnumber>]/qcbin
Note:OnlyHTTPandHTTPSprotocolsaresupported.
IfyouaregeneratinganupdatedMSIfile,fromthedropdownlist,selectaserveraddressthatyou
previouslyentered.
External Authentication users.Usehttp://localhost:<port>/qcbinintheServer Addressfield.
5. Tochangetheproxysettings,clickProxy Settings.

MSI SelectalanguagefortheMSIuserinterface.
Language
MSI TheMSIfilename.TheMSIfilenameincludesthefollowingelements:
Name
ALMserver address.AsenteredintheServer Addressbox.
MSI version number.Theversionnumberincreasesautomaticallyeachtimeyou
createanMSIfileforthesameserveraddress.
SaveMSI TheoutputfolderinwhichtheMSIfileissaved.ItisrecommendedtosavetheMSI
in fileoutsidetheALMClientMSIGeneratorprogramdirectory.
Tip: ClicktheBrowsebuttontoselectadifferentfolder.
7. Selectoneofthefollowingoptions:

Include SelectthisoptionifyouwanttoregisterALMclientcomponentsonthe
Component workstations.ALMclientsmustberegisteredtoenableuserstoworkwithother
Registration HPtestingtoolsaswellasthird-partyandcustomtools.Formoreinformation,
refertotheHPApplicationLifecycleManagementInstallationandUpgrade
Guide.
UseShared SelectthisoptionifyouwanttodeployALMclientcomponentsonashared
Deployment locationofaclientmachine.Thisisusefulforusersonvirtualenvironmentssuch
Mode asCitrixandVMwareaccessingthesamelocation.
Skip SelectthisoptiontoinstructtheMSItobypasschecksforsystemprerequisites
Prerequisites onclientmachines.Thisisusefulonmassdistributionsystems,whichwilldeploy
Check clientcomponentsevenifprerequisitesaremissing.
Note:Toenablethisfeature,youmustdefinetheSKIP_CLIENT_
PREREQUISITES_CHECKsiteparameter,andsetitsvalueto“Y”.For
moreinformation,refertotheHPApplicationLifecycleManagement
AdministratorGuide.Thisfeatureisnotsupportedonworkstations
usingHPALMExplorer.
8. TogeneratetheMSI,clickGenerateMSI.
TheProgressdialogboxopens,displayingtheprogressoftheMSIgeneration.Thismaytake
severalminutes.ClickShow DetailstodisplaylogdetailsoftheMSIgeneration.

9. AftertheMSIisgenerated,intheProgressdialogbox,clickGoto MSItoopenthefolderinwhich
theMSIfileissaved.
Running ALM Client MSI Files
TheALMClientMSIfileenablesyoutolocallydeployALMclientcomponentsonaworkstation.
To runtheALM Client MSIfile:
1. Logontotheclientmachinewithadministratorprivileges.
Note:IfyouworkonmultipleALMversionsside-by-sideandincludeclientregistrationin
theALMClientMSIfile,closeallopeninstancesofpreviousversionsofALM/Quality
Center.
2. RuntheMSIfile.TheALMClientSetupWizardopens.
