Welcome This book is about making standard square cushions, and the variety of designs, techniques, closures, edges and fillings that you can use to create a wealth of fabulous cushions to brighten your home. A Whole Book About Cushions? You may wonder how I am going to fill a whole book with cushions. Cushions can be a little dull – it has to be said. You buy them (or make them yourself) in a colour and fabric to match your colour scheme, arrange them artfully on your sofa and there they sit, only requiring an occasional pummelling to keep them looking lovely. But cushions can be so much more than just decorative. They can be informative, educational, amusing, conversation-starting, comforting, soothing, message-bearing, nostalgic and just plain fun to have around. Cushions Needn’t be Boring This book contains lots of ideas for making interesting and fabulous square cushions. Throughout the book there are ideas and instructions for designing and making the constituent parts of your cushion. Then it’s up to you to combine these different design elements in any way you like to create your own cushions. The possibilities are practically endless. More ideas for shaped cushions, and I have lots, will be the subject of a future book. Cushions Can Be Cool Many of the cushions that you see for sale in furniture and chain stores are square and rely heavily on the fabric design. Finding cushions to suit your home décor can be difficult. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Cushions can be decorated in any way that takes your fancy. Make them as cool and as fabulous as you like. Cushions Can Make Peace Do your children jostle and fight for poll position on the sofa? Why not restore peace by making them their own floor cushion. You could even add a few pockets for games consoles, controllers or books. Cushions Can Be Funky If you want to get your message across but nobody’s listening, then put it on a cushion. Maybe your family has a favourite saying from the past that causes laughter whenever it’s mentioned. Why not immortalize it on a cushion? With the help of this book, cushions need never be dull again. Gone will be the days when they languished, unnoticed, on the sofa or gathered dust on the floor, after you got fed up piling them on the bed every morning.
