Duringthecourseofthenextthreemonths, Chasseloup-Laubatandhisarch-rivalCamille Jenatzywentbackandforth–eachendingupwith threerecordstotheirnames.ItwasJenatzywho hadthefinalsay. Afiercerivalryensued,andconventionalwisdommighthaveseen Jenatzygiveupthefightwhenhisnemesisclockednearly60mphin Marchofthesameyear,buttheBelgianwasundeterred.Hereturned withamodifiedelectricmachineandbecamethefirstmantodriveat morethanamileperminute–arecordthatwouldremainunbrokenfor threeyears. JenatzycontinuedtoraceontracksandroadsacrossEurope,and pilotedaMercedestovictoryinthehighlysought-afterGordonBennett CupinIrelandin1903–subsequentlyofferingastrangepredictionthat hewouldlosehislifeinthesamemakeofcar. Inacrueltwistoffate,hisprophecywasrealisedinbizarre circumstances10yearslater.HuntingwithfriendsinLuxemburg,hehid behindatreeandpretendedtobeananimal,aprankthatworkedfar toowellandledtoanothermemberofthepartyfiringathim.Jenatzy wasrushedtohospital,inaMercedes,butbledtodeathbeforereaching ahospital.
