Ranko Bugarski is a professor of English and general linguistics at the University of Belgrade. He was born in Sarajevo in 1933, where he received his primary,secondaryandtertiaryeducation,graduatingattheFacultyofPhilosophy of the University of Sarajevo (Department of Germanic Studies) in 1957. In the academicyear1962–63hedidpostgraduateworkatUniversityCollegeLondon, andin1966–67hewasaVisitingScholaratColumbiaUniversity,NewYork.In 1969 he obtained a Ph.D. degree in Linguistics at the University of Belgrade. Since 1970 Ranko Bugarski has been teaching Introduction to Language Study,EnglishSyntax,TranslationTheory,GeneralLinguisticsandSociolinguis- tics at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, first as Assistant Professor and subsequently as Associate Professor and Professor. He has supervised 10 Ph.D. dissertations and over 40 M.A. theses, and has served as head of the Depart- ments of English and General Linguistics. He has taken part in and organized numerous important scientific gatherings in the field of linguistics and related disciplines, has been the editor or coeditor of many national and international journals, and a member of numerous respectable national and international scientific instituti ons and societies. TheshapingofBugarskiasalinguisttookplaceduringanarguably“golden age” of linguistics — from the fifties to the seventies of the last century of the millennium which is drawing to an end. Since the seventies he has published over 300 items.2 In addition to his original research, his linguistic writings have had two generalaims:(a)presentingtotheYugoslavlinguisticaudience thetheoretically andmethodologicallymostrelevantlinguistictrends,schools,techniques,notions, ideasandterms;3and(b)acquaintingtheinternationallinguisticcommunitywith pertinent Yugoslav language issues.4 In doing so, he has endeavored to stay impartial; hehasnotsubscribedtoanyofthe numerousversionsof structuralor generative linguistic theories flourishing during the past decades. D. dissertation, which back in the late sixtiesforeshadowedthebasictenetsofcognitivelinguistics.
