The audience and participants of VECPAR are researchers and students in academic departments, government laboratories, and industrial organiza- tions. There is a permanent website for the conference series at http://vecpar.fe.up.pt, maintained by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. The13theditionofVECPARwasorganizedinSãoPedro,Brazil,duringSeptember 17–19, 2018. Previous editions of VECPAR were held in Porto (Portugal, 2016), Oregon (USA, 2014), Kobe (Japan, 2012), Berkeley (USA, 2010), Toulose (France, 2008), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil, 2006), Valencia (Spain, 2004), and Porto (Portugal, 2002, 2000, 1998, 1996 and 1993). ThiseditionofVECPARhadaveryexcitingprogramwith17fullpapersaccepted, one short paper, and two posters, contributed by authors from 15 different countries. The acceptance rate was 53%, repeating the pattern of previous editions. We had a varied selection of papers, with major themes covering heterogeneous systems, shared memory systems and GPUs, and techniques including domain decomposition, scheduling and load balancing, with a strong focus on computational science applications. To enrich the conference, we had five keynote presentations: (cid:129) Gabriel Wainer (Carleton University), “Simulation Everywhere” (cid:129) RichardVuduc(GeorgiaInstituteofTechnology),“AnAlgorithm,aDataStructure, and a Machine That All (Try to) Move or Store Fewer Bits” (cid:129) Kentaro Sano (R-CCS, RIKEN), “FPGA-Based Data-Flow Computing for High-Performance Numerical Simulation” (cid:129) Tal Ben-Num (ETH Zurich), “Demystifying Parallel and Distributed Deep Learning” (cid:129) Gerard Gorman (Imperial College), “Code Generation for Finite Difference and Data Inversion – Where Angles Fear to Thread” VECPAR 2018 also held a panel discussion focused on the convergence of HPC and AI in the context of science and industry. The invited panelists were: Dr. Pedro Cruz (NVIDIA, Brazil), Dra. Carla Oshtoff (LNCC, Brazil), Dr. Edson Borin (Unicamp, Brazil), Dr. Eduardo Michelis (LNLS, Brazil), and Dr. Gerard Gorman (ImperialCollege,UK).ThepanelwasmoderatedbyDr.OsniMarques(LBNL,USA). The most significant contributions to VECPAR 2018 are made available in the present book, edited after the conference and after a second review of all accepted vi Preface papers that werepresented. Thepapersubmission and selection weremanagedviathe EasyChair conference management system. The success of the VECPAR conference and its long life are a result of the collaboration of many people. In particular, for their contribution to the present book, we would like to thank all the authors for their work and for meeting the tight deadlines, and all members of the Scientific Committee for their commitment and invaluable contribution in the selection of papers.
