ANTITUSSIVEEFFECTS ResultsfromanimalstudiesshowthatAdhatodavasicaextractexertsconsiderable antitussiveactivitywhenadministeredorallyandiscomparabletocodeinewhen coughisduetoirritantstimuli(Dhuley1999).Theantitussiveactivitymaybedueto theactionofvasicinoneandvasicinol,whichhaveactivityinthecerebralmedulla. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY Potentanti-inflammatoryactivityhasalsobeendemonstratedforthealkaloidfraction andshowntobeequivalenttothatofhydrocortisoneinonestudy(Chakraborty& Brantner2001). BRONCHODILATORANDANTI-ASTHMATICACTIVITY Accordingtoa2002review,bothvasicineandvasicinonepossessinvitroandinvivo bronchodilatoryactivityandinhibitallergen-inducedbronchialobstructionina mannercomparabletothatofsodiumcromoglycate(Dorsch&Wagner1991,Jindal etal2002). OTHER ACTIONS HEPATOPROTECTIVE Adhatodavasicaleaf(50–100mg/kg)wasshowntoprotectagainstinducedliver damageinrats(Bhattacharyyaetal2005);100mg/kgofAdhatodavasicawas comparabletothehepatoprotectiveabilityofsilymarinat25mg/kg.Anearlierstudy showedthatAdhatodavasica(100–200mg/kg)protectedagainstcarbontetra- chloride-inducedliverdamageinrats(Panditetal2004).Theleafextract significantlyenhancedtheprotectiveenzymessuperoxidedismutaseandcatalasein theliver:200mg/kgofAdhatodavasicawasshowntobecomparableto25mg/kg ofsilymarin.
