Chapter One What are Binaural Beats? Binaural beats are growing in popularity each year as the research and technology used in this field of study advances. New discoveries on how they can be used are constantly being made. This book serves as a crash course to help you discover the science behind binaural beats. It also teaches you how to create high-quality binaural tones whenever you want and at whatever quality you desire. It will also provide tips on how to use them effectively such as: how long you should listen, which frequency you should listen to, what effects the different frequencies have on your brain, etc. I will give you the tools and knowledge that will empower you to start creating your very own beats today. Once you have read the book and are ready to move forward, I will give you access to a network of people dedicated to research and creating high- quality binaural beats to enhance people's life. In a nutshell, binaural beats consist of two sine waves made of slightly different frequencies to form a desired frequency difference. The difference in the two tones is then used to alter the type of brain activity a person experiences. The change to the brain's electrical patterns can then be used to enhance many aspects of a person's physiological and physical state. Below is an example of what a binaural difference will look like when creating your beats. Image (1.1) In image 1.1 I generated two separate sine waves. The top one has a frequency of 10 HZ and the bottom 12 HZ. Each tone is played in a separate ear using a stereo headset or a similar audio device. The user hears a tone with a frequency difference of 2 which is commonly used for nerve regeneration. There are many of these differences that we know about and have uses for. I will give you the full list with uses in a later chapter. Types of Binaural Beats There are five main electrical patterns our brain experiences throughout the day. At any given time our brain has a dominant pattern. This can alter a person's mood, and their life can become unbalanced. Once you determine which electrical pattern is dominating your brain, you can use the required binaural tone to calm your thought process. Think about when you are having a restless night. Your Beta brain waves may be the dominant pattern at that time. The best binaural beat session for this situation would be a shift from Alpha to Delta. This shifts your brain from a highly active state to a low-level state. In a few cases, it may help for you to play a half hour of Beta waves before the sleep session. What does all of this mean exactly? I will list the five types of brainwave activity, and binaural beat ranges to help you better understand the terminology. ❖ The types of brain waves are listed from highest to lowest Gamma Range: 40 Hz - 100 Hz Gamma brain waves are the highest energy levels recorded in the human brain. They coincide with our brains mental processing speed, memory retention, and sensory input. This range is beneficial for meditation and high-level thinking. Some people experience a euphoric effect because of the heightened senses. Restlessness is another product of high gamma activity. Beta Range: 12 Hz - 40 Hz The beta brain waves are most prominent when a person is awake throughout the day. They are closely tied to thinking and logical problem solving. Students normally achieve higher grades when they have a high - average level of beta activity in their brain during class. Children who fall behind in school usually exhibit lower frequencies of energy during class. Caffeine and other stimulants such as adrenaline will naturally raise the brains Beta energy level. Alpha Range: 8 Hz - 12 Hz Alpha brain waves are commonly known as the middle pattern. Think of this energy level as a door from consciousness to your subconsciousness. It is a great energy level to induce when you want to fall asleep or begin meditating. If you and to move from a high energy level to a low energy level and vice versa you should sync your brain with Alpha waves beforehand for a smooth transition. Binaural beats that are in the Alpha range have relaxing effects. They help with stress management. Think of this range as the balancing range. Alpha waves can be used as natural alternatives to drugs like marijuana, antidepressants, alcohol, etc. Theta Range: 4 Hz - 8 Hz It only gets deeper into the mind from here. The Theta range is most commonly used to induce sleep and enhance daydreaming sessions. This is a very emotional state of the human brain. Too much Theta wave can be dangerous and should only be used in moderation. They can be considered a natural depressant. They have a good side, though. Theta waves unleash your deepest thoughts and creative abilities. You can discover what it means to feel like a human at this level. Theta waves are most present in sleep and should mainly be induced during sleep. Our dreams latch on to the Theta range; that is why they are so random, or creative. Delta Range: 0 Hz - 4 Hz Finally, the slowest brain waves recorded in humans. As technology progresses, we may find higher and lower frequencies than are presented in this book. I will be sure you have access to my educational community so you can stay on top of the latest trends towards the end of this book. The Delta range is most commonly found in babies and young children. As we grow older and more mature, our brain waves shift from the Delta range to the more conscious Theta range during sleep. Binaural beats that harness Delta waves will help you feel rejuvenated after a good night's sleep. Low-level bodily functions such as a person's heart beat, digestive tract, and the immune system use the Delta range to function. Brain injuries that cause a person to have a hard time staying awake usually present higher levels of Delta waves. The Delta range may be a cause of “Brain Farts.” How Binaural Beats are formulated In the beginning, of this chapter, we went over the basic building blocks of binaural beats. I will skim over the basics once more and get into why it works mathematically. To create these tones, you will need to at least understand the basic math of creating them. The Basics As we know already, binaural beats are two tones made up of different frequencies played in separate ears to give the desired effect. How exactly are they created mathematically how can you figure out what tone you want to use? In this example let's use a fictional character named Fred. He is having trouble sleeping at night, and we need to help him solve this restless problem. Using our knowledge of the different electrical patterns in the brain, we can conclude that Fred’s Beta patterns are dominant when he is falling asleep. Most people would have subconsciously trained their brain to be in an Alpha state before bed but sometimes our sleeping patterns are messed up, and we become a Fred. Think about the properties of sound for a second. If you listen to a loud subwoofer at 10 Hz, you will feel the air moving around you. If you listen to a loudspeaker at 1000 Hz, you will feel more of a vibration effect. The Hz of the two tones that make up a binaural beat does not matter; they can be anything. What does matter is the number difference between the two tones. For example, Fred enjoys deeper sounds when going to sleep so we will insert a tone of 60 Hz into a right ear. We need the difference of the two tones to be 90 Hz, so we will insert a tone of 150 into his left ear. Right ear (150) - Left Ear (60) is equal to a difference of 90 Hz. That difference is what the brain will sync to. I have created an equation for you to follow when creating your beats below. All of the followings are the same equation in different formats: ● With a resulting tone of ● ● ΔR = |t1−t2| ❖ If you get a negative number, just get rid of the negative sign, and you will have the tone difference. For example, -10 would equal to 10. This is also known as getting the absolute value of the number. Chapter Two How can you benefit? There are three main reasons someone would use binaural beats. I will go over the details throughout this chapter. Once we are finished with that, we will move on to the best usage practices and eventually creating our own. Let’s get started!
