ABOUT THE EDITORS
Mohammad Ilyas, Ph.D.
Dr. Mohammad Ilyas received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering
from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, in
1976. From March 1977 to September 1978, he worked for the national
Water and Power Development Authority in Pakistan. In 1978, he was
awarded a scholarship for his graduate studies and he completed his M.S.
degree in electrical and electronic engineering in June 1980 at Shiraz
University, Shiraz, Iran. In September 1980, he joined the doctoral program
at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He completed his
Ph.D. degree in 1983. His doctoral research was about switching and flow
control techniques in computer communication networks. Since September
1983, he has been with the College of Engineering, Florida Atlantic
University, Boca Raton, where he is currently associate dean for graduate
studies and research. He is also interim associate vice president, Division
of Research and Graduate Studies. From 1994 to 2000, he was chairman
of the department. During the 1993–94 academic year, he was on sabbatical
leave with the Department of Computer Engineering, King Saud University,
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Dr. Ilyas has conducted successful research in various areas including
traffic management and congestion control in broadband and high-speed
communication networks, traffic characterization, wireless communication
networks, performance modeling, and simulation. He has published one
book, four handbooks, and over 150 research articles. He has supervised
10 doctoral dissertations and more than 35 master’s theses to completion.
He has been a consultant to several national and international organiza-
tions. Dr. Ilyas is an active participant in several IEEE technical committees
and activities, and a senior member of IEEE.

Syed A. Ahson
Syed Ahson received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Aligarh
Muslim University, Aligarh, India, in 1995. He received his master’s degree
in computer engineering in July 1998 at Florida Atlantic University, Boca
Raton. From September 1997 to September 1999, he was with NetSpeak
Corporation (now part of Ne2Phone), a leading provider of Voice-over-
IP solutions as a software developer. Since September 1999, he has been
with iDEN Subscriber Division of Motorola, Inc., where he is a senior
software engineer.
Syed Ahson has extensive knowledge of wireless data protocols (WAP
2.0 MMS, Wireless Email, Wireless Profiled TCP, Wireless Profiled HTTP)
and has also worked extensively with Voice-over-IP Protocols (H.323,
RTSP, RTP). He has published several research articles and taught under-
graduate engineering courses as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic
University.

PREFACE
Wireless communications networks have been in existence for many years.
Recent advances in microelectronics and transmission techniques, and the
needs of users have led to the development of many applications of
wireless communication networks. There is potential for many more
wireless applications. In particular, there has been a tremendous growth
in wireless local area networks (WLANs). Applications of WLANs include
many important fields such as academia, healthcare, defense, home, search
and rescue, and emergency management. There are several technical
challenges related to WLANs which need to be addressed.
The Handbook of Wireless LANs provides technical information about
all aspects of wireless local area networks. The areas covered range from
basic concepts to research grade material, including future directions.
It reviews the current state of wireless local area networks and serves
as a source of comprehensive reference material on this subject. It contains
25 chapters written by experts from around the world and is organized
in the following six sections:

The targeted audience for the handbook includes professionals who
are designers or planners for wireless local area networks, researchers
(faculty members and graduate students), and those who would like to
