The officers of the Joint Command and General Staff Course (JCGSC) shall undertake a major written assignment – the Individual Study Paper (see Learning Area 5 (Academic Writing) in the Course Plan), commonly referred to as the ISP. 2. This Directive aims to outline the formal requirements and format for the ISP and oral presentation as well as introduce the guidelines relative to the process of academic writing and oral presentation. 3. The aim of the ISP is to provide officers with skills to undertake independent and critical analysis of a topic based on their own research, and to communicate that analysis effectively both in writing and orally. 4. The ISP as a product has to follow certain universal principles of academic writing; relying, when appropriate, on a pre-set array of regulations and requirements, as provided by BALTDEFCOL. 5. This Directive applies to the JCGSC 2012-2013 and may see modifications for future iterations of that course. 6. The performance level of officers in academic writing shall be assessed throughout the course. 7. This means that grades for assignments are cumulative, and that performance is determined at the end of the course, when the final presentation is made. 6 | P a g e
