Tudor studied with Marie Rambert at her Ballet Club and became a dancer and later a choreographer for the company. In 1938, Tudor co-founded the London Ballet and in 1939 he moved to the United States to work with the Ballet Theatre, later American Ballet Theatre. Although Tudor retired from dancing in 1950, he continued to choreograph and teach for institutions such the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School, Juilliard School, and the Royal Swedish Ballet. In 1986, Tudor was a Kennedy Center Honoree. Tudor is known for works including: Jardin aux Lilacs (Lilac Garden), Dark Elegies, Echoing of Trumpets, Gala Performance, Pillar of Fire, Shadowplay, and Undertow. Tudor often worked with his long-time partner, the dancer Hugh Laing. Tudor died April 19, 1987. Hugh Laing, born Hugh Skinner in Barbados, was a British ballet dancer. He met Antony Tudor while studying at Marie Rambert's Ballet Club. Laing was a member of Tudor's London Ballet. He traveled to the United States with Tudor and eventually worked with Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet. During his career, Laing danced numerous roles created for him by Tudor as well as choreographies by Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine. In 1954, Laing perfomed the role of Harry Beaton in the film version of Brigadoon. Laing married the dancer Diana Adams in 1947; they were divorced in 1953. Laing died May 10, 1988. iii Antony Tudor and Hugh Laing Photographs Scope and content note Scope and content note The Antony Tudor and Hugh Laing Photographs document the career and personal lives of Antony Tudor and Hugh Laing. Tudor and Laing worked together and separately in the dance world for decades. The collection contains a significant number of professional photographs of dance works related to the two men as dancers and to Tudor's work as choreographer, including Day Before Spring, Dark Elegies, Dim Lustre, Gala Performance, Jardin aux Lilas/Lilac Garden, Pillar of Fire, and Undertow. The collection includes professional and non-professional photographs of each of the men onstage, backstage, and outside the dance world, including personal photographs of Hugh Laing and Diana Adams taken on vacation and on tour. In addition, there are several professional and amateur photographs of dancers, friends, and colleagues of Tudor and Laing. The collection contains a number of slides which chiefly relate to trips to Barbados in and around 1959. One group of slides, however, appears to document the costumes of the 1948 ballet Shadow of the Wind. Most of the collection's negatives remain in their original glassine wrappers and have been listed alphabetically. One group of negatives has been rehoused; it correlates to contact sheets within the collection depicting artworks, people and horses.
