In the event that the reader has limited access to life-drawing resources, such as studio facilities or live models, it is recommended that the reader find alternative resources, such as friends and family; uninstructed workshops or classes; or photo references, from magazines, books, the Internet, etc. Each chap- ter will cover an individual Key Topic and include study questions the reader may use when practicing observational drawing, as well as drills and/or exercise ideas to practice these concepts, including exploratory exercise ideas meant to com- bine creativity with observational studies centered around gesture drawing and storytelling. One may also use this book to supplement current studies, whether in uninstructed workshops or instructed classes. It is recommended to execute observational studies on a daily basis, whether as part of a warm-up set before working or only to sharpen the battle-axe, so to speak. The suggested drills and exercises serve to inspire the reader to develop problem-solving skills as they relate to his or her own learning; for example, if the reader finds himself or her- self lacking confidence in any particular facet or element of drawing, he or she must analyze what that facet is, and how that facet may be improved. In doing so, the reader will begin to develop the autodidactism necessary for the continued discovery, comprehension, and development of the craft of drawing. The drills and exercises can be manipulated and tailored by the reader so as to address the particular problems being faced at any given time. They may be reinvented, combined, recombined, and mixed with other methodologies to produce a cur- riculum that is individually tailored to any particular reader. The ideas in this book are meant to be played with and expounded upon by other artists, and the reader is invited to use as much or as little imagination and creativity with the lessons as he or she wishes. In this way, the reader may continuously be chal- lenged by observational drawing, and gesture drawing in particular, in addition to the endless possibilities that arise when approaching life and gesture drawing from a place of story. This study guide may further be complemented by any courses in perspec- tive, visual communication, and analytical figure drawing, as these particular foundation studies help provide the basis for solid drawing, which is a critical ix
