With the exception ofthe noteon snakebehaviour, the papers in this issueofThe Victorian Natu-
ralistfocusprimarilyonaspectsoftheplantworld. Consideredsimplyasacollection ofpaperson
natural history, there is certainly diversitywithin the subject matters treated here. Looked at in a
differentway,however,thereisinfactadiscerniblethemerunningthroughallofthepapersinthis
issue: theyeach, invariousways,areabout change’.
The element ofchange in the papers by both Jayawardana and Backhouse is central to those
authors’subjects. Indeed,inbothcasesitisheraldedinthetitles. InthecaseoftheMay,Sinnotand
SinnotpieceonProtuberacanescens,whatisbeingasked isthatwehenceforth changeourviewof
thefungus. AsimilarcasecanbeputforHoser’spaperon climbingbehaviourin certainspeciesof
snake.Thereportedobservationsruncontrarytotheusualviewofthematterand,ultimately, may
requireachange in thatview.
