From the Editors The 2011 FNCV Biodiversity Symposium, held on 19/20 November, focused on forests. In the International YearofForests, thesubjectwas a fittingone. Inthisissue, theEditors arepleasedto publishsomeofthepaperspresented atthatevent,byMoore,FlarleyandMueck. The papers making up the remainder ofthis issue ofThe Victorian Naturalist do not form any unityoftheme, area, orindeed subjectmatter. Theydo, however, servetoremind us thatthefield ofnatural historyencompasses a broad spectrum ofinterests and activities. Because ofthiswide tolerance, articles focusing on fungi, historical botany and phytoplankton can appear together in the pages ofthisjournal. It is a feature that, as one reader has remarked, makes The Victorian Naturalist‘ofimmensevalue’. Afurthervaluableaspect ofthis particular issue is the publication — ofa couple of‘firsts’ the first Australian record ofa fungus species, and a first collection ofa DinoflagellatebloomfromtheicesurfaceofanAustralianlake.
