I think having a pas- o sion keeps us active, alive, and interesting, and interested in other people and places. Quilting i has led me to meet a fabulous group of people t and to travel to wonderful parts of the world. a Quilting keeps our minds creative. c n I make quilts because I have to…I honor my i d Creator through my quilts. I make quilts because I like to…if others like them, all the better, but e I would make my quilts even if I had to stack them hidden in a closet. D I dedicate this book to my sons and daughters-in-law, and to my beautiful grandchildren; they are my proudest creations. And, to my husband, who has been my greatest supporter. 99-03-108E CT-FREDDY’s Home 175L H-2540dpi-1 s A MARRIAGE OF HOUSE AND QUILTS t n The House That Freddy Built..... 6 e Neil’s Study..... 24 t n Freddy’s Studio..... 26 o How I Paint My Garden..... 32 C Deciding What Fabrics to Use..... 34 My Fabric Collection..... 38 f o Black and White Fabrics..... 44 e DEVELOPING THE BLOCK l b Block Basics..... 48 a Dare to Take Risks..... I believe a quilter’s home is a haven, and I want to show you what I have done with mine. I hope to show you how quilts and houses have a symbiotic relationship. One complements the other; one relies on the other. H When you walk into my home, I want you to feel as if you are walking into one of my quilts. They tell the world who you are, what you love, and what inspires you. When I first saw my home I was enchanted by the property, but the house itself was a challenge. The brown redwood inte- rior made it very dark. I wondered how I would convert this house into an inviting home, one full of brilliant color. Before giving in to utter panic, I thought of my house quilts: how I start building my blocks one by one, which gave me courage. I began transforming my home one step at a time. I used thirty-five different colors throughout the house. A room was painted one color and then that color was repeated in some other room. I didn’t want a jumble of unrelated colors, but a feeling of excitement of what else was to be seen, whether an unexpected surprise or a joyfulness—a playfulness that yes, someone can really live in all this color. 8 F R E D D Y ’ S H O U S E 99-03-108E CT-FREDDY’s Home 175L H-2540dpi-1 T H E H O U S E T H A T F R E D D Y B U I L T 9 99-03-108E CT-FREDDY’s Home 175L H-2540dpi-1
