Theproposedactionisasurfaceandimdergroundminingprojectonimpatentedlode andplacerclaimsonpubliclandsinImperialCounty,California. About2.5million tonsoforeand8.5milliontonsofwasterockwouldbeminedfromtwoopenpits,the CrossPitanddieQueenPit,duringanestimated twoyearperiod. TheQueenPit wouldbebackfilleduponcompletionofmining. Undergroimdminingvrauldbeginin theCrossPitandbeconductedconcurrentlywithsurfacemining. One-halfmillion tonsoforeand75,000tonsofwasterockwouldbeproduced duringathreeyear period. Oreproducedbybothsurfaceandundergroundminingwouldbetransported 2.5milesbyhaultruckstoexistingmillandheapleachfacilitiesinAmericanGirl Canyonviaaproposedhaulroad. WasterockwouldbedisposedofintheQueenPit, andononelargeandthreesmallerwasterockdumps. Aggregateforuseinstabilizing undergroundmineworkingswouldbehauledfromaquarryneartheexistingAmerican GirlCanyonfacilitiestotheCrossPitalongthesamehaulroad. Surfacedisturbance resultingfromtheproposedactionwouldtotal191acres.
