Martin H.Manser David H.Pickering vii In tro d u c ti o n An allusion is a reference that evokes a certain set of aspects or features of a person or thing.A kind and selfless person,for example,may be referred to as a Good Samaritan;harsh or severe action may be described as draconian;a place that offers happiness and security may be thought of as a promised land or a place that is notorious for its depravity and vice likened to Sodom and Gomorrah;one’s conscience may be regarded as a still small voice;a fatal weak- ness may be referred to as a person’s Achilles’heel;something complex may be described as labyrinthine; and something that rises anew in the face of defeat may be compared to a phoenix rising from the ashes.
