Director's Notes '7he spirit of creation is simply the spirit of contradiction." Jean Cocteau We human beings want a certain degree of order in our lives. We foster institutions, such as the family, community services and the police, whose function is to maintain that order. Chaos and the darker aspects of human nature invariably threaten to make a complete mess of our plans for a neat and tidy, safe and nurturing ,. world. On the other hand, our lives would be very dull and uninteresting without the presence of a certain degree of anarchy. How much of it to allow is a matter of taste. We don't like pain and discomfort. Suffering is something which is to be avoided. How then do we reconcile these contradictory forces? There is no simple answer that will satisfy all of us. I take great pleasure in observing how the characters in this play struggle with this question. ~alµ~ SEMESTER I SEMESTER II Dr. Ralph Allison is an Associate Professor and Co-ordinator of The Canadian Stage The European Stage Theatre Performance in the Department of Theatre at Concordia EsCilPC from Happine,s University.
