ELCOME TO TUDIO USINESS RCHITECT
ER/Studio Business Architect (previously known as EA/Studio) applies two different types of
modeling: Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN), and Conceptual Modeling. These
modeling processes allow you to integrate roles from various constituencies to collaborate,
agree, create, and enable executable processes.
The Business Process Modeling portion of ER/Studio Business Architect (ER/Studio BA) is a
visual modeling application that focuses on business process modeling and its relationship to
related enterprise and data artifacts. Business processes do not exist in a vacuum within the
organization, so ER/Studio BA allows you to link key business process information to data,
organization, rules, etc. to get a broad view of the organization and show how processes and
data impact one another.
The Conceptual Modeling portion allows Data Modelers to create high-level designs of core
business concepts to gain acceptance and requirements from the business. These high-level
Conceptual models can be forward engineered to create detailed Logical Data Models in
ER/Studio. You can relate data objects to business process information and create Usage (CRUD)
and Impact Analysis reports. In addition to process-specific information, related business
information can also be linked to data objects such as business rules, business elements,
business units, and stewards.
Through robust reporting, modeling, and graphical impact analysis, users are able to provide
relevant information to various stakeholders within the organization in a format that makes sense
to them. For example, a data analyst may wish to see a Usage (CRUD) report showing what data
is used by a given process for compliance. A business user may want to see a list of relevant
business rules in a spreadsheet. A process modeler needs to see a semantically-rich process
model. ER/Studio BA allows each stakeholder to see a different “slice” of information—all from
the same data source and metadata model.

ER/Studio BA is used for creating graphical representations of your business from the core
concepts that describe the business, to the processes detailing how your business operates. You
can model business processes and how those processes use data. The Business Process
Modeling is based on the BPMN standard.
The Conceptual Modeling provides intuitive ways to outline subject areas and concepts that can
then drive the creation of detailed data models. The Conceptual Modeling uses high-level
representations allowing for top-down database design.
Functionality Description
Conceptual Modeling
Conceptual Model Creation Support for high-level conceptual modeling using elements such as subject areas,
business entities, interactions, and relationships.
Relationship Traceability Model links between any conceptual or process modeling elements allowing you to
trace relationships between models.
Conceptual Model Export Conceptual models can be exported to Embarcadero’s ER/Studio to become the
foundation for creating ER/Studio logical data models. The export uses pre-defined
mapping.
Business Process Modeling
Process Model Creation Support for straightforward process modeling that uses standard elements such as
sequences, tasks, swimlanes, start events, and gateways.
BPMN Compliance Optional automatic validation of process diagrams to ensure compliance with the
BPMN specification and prevent the addition of non-compliant modeling elements.
Embedded sub-process Independent sub-processes and embedded collapsible sub-processes can be
support for functional included within a business process to allow for maximum flexibility in diagramming,
decomposition while still ensuring a workable visual diagram.
Impact Analysis Reporting
Multi-object, Multi-level Impact analysis reports can be generated to show interrelationships between
Reporting process, data, stewardship, business rules, diagram usage, heritage, connecting
objects etc.
Report Filtering Impact analysis reports can filter based on type of relationship, object type, or text
strings including wildcard matching.
Usage (CRUD) Reporting
Link Process with Data The relationships between business processes and data objects can be modeled to
identify what processes create, read, update, or delete data objects.
CRUD Reporting CRUD reports identify which processes affect which data, and what affects they
have. Reports are available in a straightforward spreadsheet view.
Report Filtering Reports can be shown across object types, or can be filtered based on individual
object types such as tasks or business processes, allowing users to drill down based
on specific requirements.
Business Artifact Modeling
External Data Objects Support for data objects which are general data storage constructs that can
represent databases, file systems, or other data storage mechanisms.
