This volume contains local library statistics, county statistics, and summary data for the state and for the 10 library systems. Section I, Summary Statistics, contains data on statewide public library statistics, summary characteristics of Texas Library Systems, and public library statistics by system. Section II, Statistics by Library, contains data covering: expenditures; income by source; library collection; local library services; staffing; and facilities for the 500+ libraries in Texas. Section 3, Statistics by County, provides the following data for the 250+ counties in Texas: 1998 Census population estimates; population served in fiscal year 2001; maximum property tax for library; library income from county and all other sources; cities with libraries; and Texas Library System membership status. The statistics reflect each library's 1999 local fiscal year, defined as the fiscal year which includes January 1, 1999. The membership year noted in the statistics refers to the State Fiscal Year 2001 (September 1, 2000 to August 31, 2001). "Member" indicates that the library met the criteria for membership in the Texas Library System, individually or as part of a federated library system (FLS). We would like to gratefully acknowledge the efforts made by all public librarians for their cooperation in collecting and reporting the data contained in this volume. We would also like to thank the public librarians for submitting the data in the new electronic format, and submitting it on time. Congratulations! We would also like to thank the Texas Library System coordinators and consultants in the ten Systems for coming to the aid of the libraries entering the data electronically. Thanks also go to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Library Develop- ment Division staff, especially Bell Clarke. Bell received the Annual Reports electronically, downloaded the information, corrected the data where necessary, and answered questions from the librarians in the field.
