More than one-half of the degrees awarded were bachelor's degrees (55%), followed by associate (23%) and master's (16%) degrees. Certificates, first professional degrees', and doctorates comprised the remaining share of degrees awarded. Degrees by Gender More than one-half of all 1993 degrees conferred were awarded to females (56.3%), a 9.7% increase since 1980. The majority of certificates were earned by female students (75.7%), and more than one-half of associate, bachelor's, and master's degrees were also awarded to females. More than one-half of the doctorates (59%) and nearly two-thirds of the first professional degrees (63%) were conferred to males, however. The proportion of females receiving degrees has increased in all degree types except certificates since 1980. The highest percentage of degrees awarded to minority students was at the certificate (14.8%) and associate (13.2%) levels. During 1993, the majority of certificates were awarded in the areas of health professions (54%) and business (21%). The diversity of subject areas in which certificates are awarded has increased among all community college campuses since 1980. Approximately 47% of the 1993 associate degrees were awarded in liberal/general studies. The number of associate degrees awarded in this discipline has increased rapidly since 1980 (157%). Other subject areas in which the number of associate degrees awarded are rising include health professions, (41.5% increase) and business management and administrative services, (22.4% increase). Among bachelor's degrees conferred, business and management was the subject of choice for the majority of the 1993 graduates (32.6%). Education (13.7%), health professions (7.4%), and social sciences and history (7.3%) were also popular subject areas for students receiving bachelor's degrees during 1993.
