The chapters in this book were pre- viously published in various places in various formats. To cite the work contained in this book and to view the individual permissions, please refer to the citation at the beginning of each chapter. Each chapter was read individually and carefully selected by the editor; the result is a book that provides a nuanced study of the effects of the environment on children's development. The chapters included examine the following topics: • Chapter 1 provides a comprehensive overview of the connections between neurodevelopmental disorders and the environment, which forms the foun- dation of the chapters that follow. Please note that as of August 2014, the CDC most recently estimates a higher percentage of children who have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), now currently about 1 in 68. (http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/facts.html) • Although the connection between environmental toxins and neurodevelop- ment is well-established, Chapter 2 describes the need of researchers for a method that more accurately accesses the prevalence and impact of various risk factors. • Chapter 3 looks at “why?” environmental exposure has such an impact on the brain’s development. • Chapter 4 provides an inclusive look at the way a particular pesticide con- tributes to a range of neurodevelopmental issues. • Chapter 5 provides a description of how endocrine disrupters are some of the most dangerous environmental toxins, contributing to a range of neuro- developmental conditions. • Belief in the connection between autism and the environment has become a part of our culture. Chapter 6 argues that researchers need defined strate- gies for sorting through the extreme claims often made by advocacy groups. • The most recent edition of the DSM defines autism as a spectrum disorder, with degrees of severity. Chapter 7 investigates the etiological mechanism that contributes to where a child falls on the spectrum.
