Alberta Learning selects and authorizes the best possible instructional materials forthe implementation of approved programs ofstudy. The resource authorization categories are basic, authorized teaching or support, and the status is noted for each resource. Basic learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning as the most appropriate for addressing the majority of outcomes ofthe course(s) or substantial components ofthe course(s); orthe most appropriate for meeting general outcomes across two or more grade levels. Support learning resources are those student learning resources authorized by Alberta Learning to assist in addressing some ofthe outcomes ofthe course(s) orcomponents ofthe course(s); orto assist in meeting the outcomes across two or more grade levels. Authorized Teaching resources are those teaching resources identified as the best available resources to support the implementation of programs of study and courses; they may be teacher guides to accompany student resources orteacher professional resources. The authorized teaching guides are listed with the student resources, while the authorized teaching professional resources are listed at the end ofthe booklet. This list ofthese newAlberta English language arts resources is organized by grade and course. Note: Alberta Learning strongly recommends that teachers read all selections in the student texts and all activities in the teacher guides priorto using them with students. Careful consideration should be given to the sensitivities of both the student audience and the community. As new resources become available, they should be previewed and gradually phased in according to need, community appropriateness, implementation timelines and available budget. Many ofthe selections areCanadian, including some FirstNations texts. Organized bygenre, the anthology consists offiveunits: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Media. Each text selection is accompaniedbyaseries of"selection activities" thatare organized under fourtopics: Understand, Apply, Analyze, and ThinkCritically. These learning activities lead students from selfto texts and beyond texts. A thematic index is included.
