This compilation of information was designed to serve as a g eneral guide to ESL programs and services, and should not be considered a f ully authoritative list of programs and services in the selected urban Albertan centres or an endorsement of the programs and services listed. Information in the booklet was provided by organizations/programs in May and June, 1998. (403) 459-5864 IX DEFINITIONS/ACRONYMS ABE Adult Basic Education. ASF Alberta Students Finance. Formerly known as Students Finance Board (SFB). Based on Demand Provider will offer the course only if the number of students interested meet the course’s minimum limit of students. Bridging Program Any ESL program that integrates students into a j ob position or a mainstream study program (e.g. ESL 10c — > E nglish 10). CAL Computer Assisted Learning CIC Citizenship and Immigration Canada Classroom-Based Program Any program which has at least one component involving a classroom situation, even though other components might involve community or workplace situations. CLB Canadian Language Benchmarks is a t ask-based descriptive scale (1-12) of language proficiency in English as a S econd Language. It is comprised of three different skill areas: Speaking/Listening, Reading, and Writing. Contact Provider When this statement appears it indicates that the information asked for was not provided or was in the process of changing and therefore to attain the accurate information the provider should be called. Customized Program This is a p rogram that is designed for the specific needs and interests of a p articular student or group of students, or it is a special interest program that teaches topic-related English. El Employment Insurance. EWP English in the Workplace. Full-Time Program Any program with 20 or more hours per week. GED General Equivalency Diploma. International Student Non-permanent resident studying in Canada with a student visa. Levels These definitions are not to be used as a b asis for referral or assessment, but only in p roviding general information about programs. x Basic Literacy: For learners with very limited reading and /or Levels (con’t) writing skills in their own language. Speak limited English, if at all. Beginner: For learners limited vocabulary and speaking ability. Understand a l imited amount of English, usually with the help of gestures. Intermediate: Learners can usually function within a k nown framework. Can comprehend instructions, questions spoken at a normal pace and complete simple writing tasks, although not always accurately. Can read short passages or familiar topics. Advanced: Speech connected with minimal hesitations, although not entirely fluent. Can read longer passages; write with fewer errors, but not on more abstract topics. Can control direction of conversation and initiate topics. Levels are also labelled in different manners for different institutions some using numbers while others letters. Generally the lower numbers and letters signify lower levels of difficulty while higher numbers and letters signify more advanced programs. Interpretations of the various levels may vary from one organization to another. The levels are currently being standardized with Canadian Language Benchmarks throughout the province. LINC Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada. One-to-One Program The level of study is set in accordance to the level of the student. Short Syllabus Program Designed to accommodate mixed level ESL clients registering on a continuous basis throughout the year. The goal is two-fold: to assists students in learning English and to provide students with the tools to be more successful learners when they enter their regular LINC programs. SF Designated Students Finance Designated progams are those which students can apply for financial assistance through Alberta Students Finance, if needed. TOEFL Test of English as a F oreign Language. TOEIC Test of English for International Communication. Tutor-Based Program A p rogram in which there is a o ne-to-one tutor-learner match. Urban Center Any Alberta community with a p opulation of 20,000 or more. XI
